The blacksmith in the old hometown is an avid prairie-dog shooter. He started keeping track in 1995 or so, and claims to have shot over 63,000 since then.

That's only a bit over 2000 a year.
Quite doable.

Back in the early 90's we went for a long weekend Prairie Dog hunt out of Dahlhart, TX we had 4500 rounds for 4 guns, and ran out of ammo. Most was 22-250 and .219 Donaldson Wasp, with two 10-22's.
Then I moved to Montana where there are Richardson's Ground squirrels...buy a case of bulk loaded .22's from Walmart in January, restock that May or June.
Then the 17 rimfires came out...expensive. Still bought a case.
Then I moved to OK and haven't shoot those guns since.

Ballards may be weaker,

I used to do a lot of sage rat hunting with a friend back in the 1980's and 90's until he moved away. It was always tough to find people who'd let you hunt their property as most seemed worried about liability. When we did they soon were happy to have us, and asked us to return anytime.
I used a .22-250, and a .22LR to take them, and we had a lot of fun shooting all day over a weekend. Just before my friend moved away I bought a CZ in .17HMR and got it sighted in. Then he moved away and it's never seen any varmint hunting, and virtually no shooting in the last 25 years. Just draws dust in a safe. Ammo was cheap back then at $6.50 a box so I bought a lot of ammo too, and have almost all of iit. Just can't find another shooting buddy who wants to varmint hunt.

Like DoubleD, I shot those little Montana critters up near Kalispell a few times. Lay on a mound with an umbrella and jug of water, a few boxes of cheap .22Ss and my trusty ol' low wall. Shoot 'em till the water ran out and head back to the kitchen for a bite to eat. nowadays, laying on my frontside for that long would cripple me if I didn't expire from the sun.

A good way to shoot gophers, ground squirrels, is idling down two tracks in the ole pickup. They are so used to ranch trucks that they stay up, and you can cover way more ground. Get out and walk, and there's way less shooting, they're down in their holes right away. Just don't shoot through the side mirror, when the scope lines up, but the bore is a bit low, lol.

Replying for a friend. Be very careful of shooting using vehicles. The curvature of the old Volkswagen bug is conducive to a rest. You can shoot the top of the door if you're in a hurry.

Great advice, you won't believe what side mirrors cost these days.

Oh yes,
Friend and I were cruising for PDs on the SD prairie with his
vehicle. He lined up on a PD across the hood and nailed his
hood ornament
