25-10 Barrel filled with Rocky Road
May 30th, 2025 at 9:32pm

I have a nice rolling block action but the barrel looks like its packed with fudge.  Can it be relined and rechambered  for the same cartridge.  I'm sure that there are probably not a lot of 25 rimfire reamers running around

Thanks for any help

I doubt anyone would have one for rental.  Too bad; bringing back the .25 Stevens RF would be more sensible than the .21 Sharp, among other modern marketing brainwaves.

You might be better served converting the block to centerfire and chambering for the .25 Hornet wildcat, if you want a cartridge around the same capacity.  Loading dies would cost you, but probably only equivalent to three boxes or so of .25 rimfire shells.

The firing pin on the .25-10 fires .22 rf just fine, just reline to .22 LR.  Will have to weld up and recut the extractor slightly.  I have a #1 sporter RB with a nearly perfect rebore from .22 rf to .25-10.  Would be a shame to line it back to .22, but I'm often tempted.

There are two liners for 25, .257 groove for most 25 caliber and .250 groove for 25 Auto.. I thought I had a liner for 25 Auto and was thinking of trying it on a Stevens Favorite but could not find the liner in my stash. So now the Stevens Favorite is a 32 S&W.

John, Weren't all the favorites rim fire?  How did you do the conversion to centerfire?  And do you care to do it again.

On this one it came in with the firing pin welded in place to make a wall hanger. I made a new breach block for centerfire and just happen to have a 32-20 take off barrel. I cut the chamber end off the barrel and fit it to the action. The barrel was one of Green Mountain octagon that came off another rifle.
The firing pin can be moved on an original breach block but it is not easy.. First the old hole must be filled in. I turn a piece of steel to fit the old firing pin hole and solder it in place. The I use a transfer punch down the barrel to mark the center of the breach block. A small hole is started at each end of the breach block and I made up a jig to line up both holes in the mill then drill all the way through with the size for the small end of the firing pin. Block is then bored for the larger part of the firing pin. Firing pin is made from piano wire or other pre hardened spring steel. Some hobby shops have piano wire up to 1/4" diameter.

The ladies model favorites were offered in the catalogs as being available in  .22-15-60 centerfire. Of course I've never seen one.

I have the same situation here Dave! I have a pristine Ballard #3 with a perfect bore that someone sent to Stevens to be rebored to .25 Stevens RF and can't tell you how many times I've considered having it lined back to .22LR so I could use it.
I took it to Greeley to sell, but it didn't sell. Going to try at our local OAC shows, and if it still doesn't sell I think I'll give in and have it relined back to .22

It's really not that hard to get a rifle in  .25 Stevens rimfire up and shooting. There's several ways to make cartridges, probably the simplest way is to breech seat with  .27 caliber nail gun loads. Some rifles may need a stronger mainspring as the nail gun loads have stronger brass cases and the rims are a bit thicker. My 44 1/2 and 044 1/2 in .25 Stevens go bang every time with the nail gun loads. My 1915 favorite may need a  stronger mainspring as it sometimes takes two hammer strikes.

Any particular brand of loads, or level of load charges? I've considered making an extra chamber case for my Ballard seating tool Jerry Cleave built for me to make it work in my #3, but never saw any info on which .27 caliber charges to use.

I've only used the Ramset brand. The loads are color coded. I have brown, lower power, green medium, and yellow, a bit higher power. I'd suggest the green coded ones. The yellow coded ones,or the even higher power ones,I would only use in a rifle with a strong action. They are somewhat dirty to shoot.

Thanks! I'll work on a case to fit my Cleave breech seater and dig out my Paul Jones .25 mold to give it a try.

I did one a few weeks back with that chamber. I have the reamer and it's the only time I have used it. Finding brass may be a problem.

25RF/CF cases can readlly be made up out of Hornet brass.  Needs turning down the webs a little and pressing into an appropriate sizing die.  Trim to length and turn the case necks to appropriate thickness.  My 44 1/2 uses regular SP primers.  Great shooter.
