.45-70 100 yard BP 'target' load using 500 Gr lead

Question where to start. To just go 100 yards I don't need hyper velocity but want a bit more than a 'gallery' load.
This is in a Sharps if that matters. Was thinking of starting with 55Gr and filler. Thoughts?
I just want to launch and let it glide in not fight the whole way down range.
Also my shoulder will be watching...  Smiley
Sure I could use a lighter bullet but these are what I have at the moment.
THX!

55 gr and a filler would probably work. COW seems to be a common  filler. You will want a little compression on your load. That load will get your bullet down range. I don't knwo what kind of accuracy you will get but its a place to start. From there you can add powder and lessen filler till you get the accuracy you are looking for. Might also want to consider pushing a damp patch through the bore between shots. Once you find the load you and the rifle likes you will be having a lot of fun.

With filler I'd make up some thin paper wads to separate the filler from the BP before seating a wad and bullet. It will give more consistent velocities and help accuracy. Cheap coffee filters, or even typing paper works well.

Fillers --- Far the best filler that I have found for taking up space in BP-loaded rounds is Amaranth Seed.   It is  small, hard, spherical seeds that meter beautifully from powder measures.  I have found them in health-food stores, and have bought them on-line as well.  Cheap and easy to measure.  I usually just dump them in on top of the powder == seems to work OK that way.

Chris told me about this and it works like a champ. It meters very easily (like a ball powder) and it is light and very hard. You can run a compression die right onto a wad on top of it (it doesn't compress but the BP under it does). I use it to reduce a 115 grain capacity case down to 82 grains. On general principles, for a bottle necked case I wouldn't use it except in the straight necked portion but maybe Chris has.

I also used amaranth seed filler after you told me about it for my .50-140 Winchester cartridges.

Thanks everyone for your input. Guess I'll have to find Amaranth seeds locally...

When I started BP, I used 58gr of 2f with a Lyman postel seated way down so all grease grooves were covered. Didn't need a filler and shot lights out to 200yds. My how times have changed... I just loaded up 78gr of Swiss 1.5 to try next weekend
