Recommendation for Next Ruger Number 1
Apr 10th, 2025 at 6:21am
Print Post
Have recently come into a couple of spare Ruger Number 1s and this morning picked up a pair of Kepplinger set triggers from this forum.

I've got Number 1s in 32-40, 38-55, 375-303, 30-06, 308, and 22 hornet.  Looking for a recommendation for an interesting/unique caliber, and then, of course, a Ruger-smith to do the work.  Any thoughts are appreciated.

OK, how about a straight .303 Brit or 30-40 Krag. Maybe even  7-30 Waters

or, go European with something like a 7x57R or any of the other rimmed variations in the 6.5-8mm range ( i.e. 7x65R, sort of a 280 Rem rimmed)

40/50 Sharps straight or you could call it a 40 Krag if you would like.

You have to decide on caliber to suit yourself, but as for a good gunsmith, I just had a #3 rebarreled to 327 FM by John Taylor.  He has a good reputation here and did a fine job for me.

My first No. 1 was a 6mm Remington.  Loved that gun.  Shot a bunch deer with out on the Oregon coast..  Sold it when I went to college to buy milk and bread for the my babies.  Always wanted to get another.

Several Years ago the Wife got me one of the  Boddington Special edition Africa No. 1  rifles in 7 x 57.  Nice gun shots well.  Great gift giver, this wife, she's a keeper.

Planned a trip for  Cape Buffalo so i bought No. 1 in 450/400 NE 3".  Then my 77 year old body convinced my 57 year old mind that with all the health problems I was having I should forego that trip.

So I took the this gun to the deer  blinds here in Oklahoma to pop a hog.  Ended up taking a a couple of deer instead.

Good wound channels, not excessive. Great blood trails.  Blood trail are an issue in Oklahoma brush patches.

I am headed to Manitoba in the fall with my son for bear.  My Primary gun with be a .500 BPE express. Perfect for bear.  My back up gun will be this No 1 in 450/400 NE 3".  Not really needed for bear, but I have.

Look at a 450/400 NE 3" in a No.1 .  Not a hard recoiler-but not mild either, accurate and fun to shot.

I had a 45/70 No. 1. After getting this gun I sold it on. Nothing wrong with the 45/70 just the 450/400 NE  was more fn.

I would not want a #1 with heavy recoil and a set trigger. The lock time is long enough for the brain to know that the set trigger has fired and if you don't drop the cussed thing, you are about to get hit with the recoil. Flinch inducing!

It looks like you have the larger calibers pretty well covered in your current rifles so my two cents says go with a 250 Savage Ackley Improved.  It will shoot targets or animals up to mule deer without much recoil.  Tom

6.5mmx53R Dutch Mannlicher would be a dandy round in a No. 1.
Make cases from 303 British.

Many years ago I made several #3s with octagon barrels in different calibers. The last #1 I did was in 32 H&R mag. It's always nice to shoot something that does not kick.

My first no 1, 7mm mag, 200 year model.

POS ... crooked chamber, didn't shoot worth beans. Extracted case wouldn't chamber if rotated.

The much later 218 Bee is a sweetheart.

A no 3 I've been working on ... waaaayyyy too long. Another ... 'crooked'r than a dog's hind leg' ... squared up and thread milled. Barrel on. Needs a stock ... and dies ...

25-20SS or one of the Stevens 25's would be a neat combo with the set trigger.
