Help with Hepburn

Several years back I bought a re-barreled Hepburn while traveling for work. Has been in the safe waiting it's time to develop loads, shoot, play with.  Was set up for BPCS with MVA sights, 45/70 Badger barrel. Got it out last week to take to the range and the block lever flopped down, letting the breech block to drop. I know it was fine when I got it and it has been sitting in the safe. What happened and how do I fix it?

Thanks
Don

Ballards may be weaker,

Sounds like the lever spring failed, which isn't uncommon on an old Hepburn, or a bad new spring. It's a double bend spring that sits under the barrel and can be easily see when you remove the forearm. They can be a little difficult to replace the first time you do it, and requires a tiny screwdriver tip to remove the screw in the lever to remove the lever. Then just remove the spring retaining screw and install the new spring.
DZ Arms sells the new springs about halfway down this page:

Thanks, also called a BOSS Spring? I’ll tear into it this evening to see. May order 2. I have two other Hepburns but have never had a problem.

With multiple Hepburns it wont hurt to have a spare. I have a spare also, but that just means I'll never break the spring. So far in decades of shooting mine I've never broken a spring. I did replace one because someone made a bad spring out of some flat steel that was too wimpy.

OK, looks to be the spring. I have taken the two forward screws out but how do you get the breech block out to access the screw for the spring?
Hepburn newby as far as smithing.

Youtube to the rescue.  There is a video on taking the Hepburn apart.  Drop the trigger assembly and then the little (I mean LITTLE) set screw and the lever and BOSS drop right out. Will order the parts and then hope I can get it back together.
