I misspoke in an earlier post - seeking your wisdom on if a 256 WinMag would be too much for a Stevens 44 action, not the 264 winMag as I said earlier.

Factory loads would be too high for sure. I have a Ruger #1 set up for breech  seat in 256 that hat shoots very well

I had another shop send me a 44 that had been a 25-20 that someone re-chambered to 256. This cartridge has way to much pressure for the action. The customer did not want to put any money into repairs so I bought the rifle, it is now a 44-40.

The .256 was a stiff enough loading to stretch the cases in the Marlin lever action rifle it was chambered in.  A friend had one and you could see the bright ring on the base after the factory loads were fired.  Only got  a couple reloads out of a case before they started separating.
