Found a stock blank I've been looking for today!

Been looking for an extra thick blank to duplicate an unusual stock for some time.  Found one today at a yard sale, for $10.  40 years or more old, encased in wax to dry correctly.  Mesquite wood.  Even has the right wrist grain flow.  I might be able to get the forearm out of it also, with some very careful cutting.  Otherwise, will have to source a mesquite forearm piece.

I planed off the sides, it's good sound wood, but pretty plain.  Will have to sand/grind away at the knot showing in the belly, and see how it will affect the final stock, and how to lay it out in the blank to avoid it.

From the same sale, got an ironwood log about 7 inches in diameter and 4 feet long and pretty sound for ironwood.  Not sure how I'm going to cut it up, don't have a bandsaw.  Might see if my portaband will cut it.

Is your rifle a Hopkins and Allen? Interesting choice of wood for a stock.

I've done it before, bet I can do it again!  Now just to find the time and ambition.  But, I won't do it until I've tig welded up the lever, and fit a barrel to the rifle.  No sense in stocking a rifle until you know it's worth the effort.

This is an interesting homemade rifle I've had for many years.  The lever finger casting is riveted onto the original lever with nails, and the barrel was hand filed offset to make the rim hit the firing pin correctly; the original was probably .32 so it doesn't hit .22 right otherwise.  Only reason I've kept it is that the stock fits me amazingly well and I want to duplicate it in something that actually fits the action and doesn't have a bunch of epoxy putty.    The offset firing pin is easy to fix on an H&A; just change the link length.  Not sure why the original "gunsmith" didn't just do that!

Dave, from the pictures the blank appears to be to short. The cheek plate on the existing stock is above the top of your blank. No?

Westerner, mostly that's camera perspective.  It's tight, maybe 1/4" short, and I can adapt to that by changing the cheek piece slightly, without affecting it's function.  I'll probably do some other minor changes too.  That makes the knot on the bottom critical, I need to know how much I'm going to lose there, as it could make the blank too short to adapt.

Nice piece of wood always wanted to try some Mesquite.  If appearance is not important or you like natural wood imperfections CA glue does wonders on knots. With bowls some look for stock with knots.

Stabilize the area with thinnest viscosity, then fill as needed with thicker, little sawdust can be mixed in for color. Works well when you are not sure the knot will remain as the work reaches final shape. Often times it will be cut away or a minor trace will remain . CA is a good preventative solution for small stock cracks too. Finds it’s way into the smallest areas.

CA = Cyanoacrylate

I agree on using CA glue.  It works wonders for stabilizing knots and other imperfections.  Sometimes the little imperfections add a lot of character to the stock.

Not slighting your ability at all my friend. I have nothing but respect for anyone who can take a slab of wood and create a stock out of it. I have enough trouble with a pre inletted one. I am amazed at some of the stocks that folks here create. Jealous of anyone with that much skill.
