Here is my J.M. Marlin, Ballard #4 1/2 Mid Range this is one of the " lightly" engraved models, and is 2 digits away from the example found on  page 151 image #s 19-11 & 19-12 in John Dutchers Book. a stunning work of art in my opinion. serial # 5589. I hope you enjoy.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Beautiful Ballard. The #4 1/2 engraved are some of the finest examples of John Marlin's Ballard rifles. Not unusual to find very similar Ballard or other Marlin rifles built within close serial number ranges as Marlin often did small runs of a particular model or variation.
The limited amount of engraving is still very tastefully done, and likely the work of John Ulrich. He did most of Marlin's engraving, along with his son George as apprentice. George later took over when his father retired.

thank you for the compliments, I Do love this Rifle. I purchased it in a 3 gun deal, all Ballards, 2 No. 5 Pacific models, one pre 1881 ( J.M. Marlin ) the other  Post 1881 ( Marlin Firearms Co.) the post model is 100% matching, the Pre Model has the wrong forearm stock and the wiping rod is just for decoration. it is however in the very rare ( or so I've read ) 44/75 cal. the post model is a .40/85 and has the 32" full octagon barrel.
