44 mag or 45 long Colt liners?
Aug 7th, 2024 at 7:33pm
Print Post
I picked up a High Wall frame here last week and it turned out to be a small shank.  I had all the parts to make it function including a small shank short (22”) 38-55 barrel with a pitted bore.  I will shoot it as is shortly, but am considering a reline and thought a 44 mag or 45 long Colt would make a fun rifle. In fact I have been eyeing the 45 colt/410 combos and think that would be fun.  Some preliminary searches haven’t turned up any suitable liners though.  Any thoughts?
Anyone have a 28 to 40 small shank barrel with a good bore?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks
Jack

I think the 45 colt/410 may be disappointing for accuracy with
the 45 colt loads.
you could have the 38-55 barrel rebored by JES to 44mag.
The 44 mag could leave more "meat" around the chamber than the 45 colt.
If you want to shoot shot you can use shot loads in the 44 mag cases. I have Speer shot capsules for my 44 mag for snake loads which equal 410 loads.

JES does not list .431 as an option but I will call them.  I do have 44 mag dies and used brass from when I had a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter which I sold to buy my first single shot.

he cuts .431 ,not. 452 that I understand?
I asked him to cut .452 for a 45 Colt and he wouldn't

Thanks George,
I missed that on his site.  Hmm.  I can't even find that on his site, but that is good news.

The nice thing about the 44 mag is that you can shoot 44 special in it, and it is a fine round accuracy wise, and a pleasure to shoot recoil wise. Leaving the Mag for venison. Please keep us posted.

Chamber  it for 44 mag amd mark the barrel "44 Evans Long" (Marlinguy's advice to me one time)
Not 100%  (or 90% ) same case but sounds cooler.

I agree that the 45/410 combo guns are not a good choice, the 45 Colt would have almost 2" before the bullet gets to the rifling and the rifling will spin the shot leaving a big hole in the middle of the pattern..
T,J's has 44 barrel Liners with 1 in 24" and 1 in 18" twist. 5/8" or 9/16" OD.
45 Colt liners with 1 in 16" or left hand with 1 in 18". 5/8". These liners are hammer forged out of 4130 steel.

Usually best to mark a barrel with the correct cartridge designation, cool or not. jmnsho, but to each his own I guess.

In my application, it was going to be on the Stevens tip up so marking it 44  mag would have made it dangerous. To each his own as they say.....

Here is the first build from the bare frame.  The barrel is just over 22”. I had a forend that fit that needs refinishing to math the rifles age. I put on my worst looking butt stock for now. (2” of non matching wood grafted on to the end).  The action is in great shape but the barrel is not but what do you expect for a $50 on eBay.  Before I pursue a rebored I want to see how it shoots as a 38-55. I loaded up few rounds with 16gr of 4759 and a 248 gr Ideal bullet.

Sometimes those orphan barrels will surprise you if you can find a bullet that will fit. Good luck and let us know how it shoots.
