Removing Orig. Dovetailed Sight

I'm upgrading the sights on my Rev-O-Noc .22 falling block, made by Hopkins Allen (a model 922, I think).  To remove the front sight, is it right to left, or left to right?

Online there is quite a bit of dispute, so before I start hammering away, I'd like to ask The Authorities at ASSRA.

No rush, right now I'm letting the Kroil solvent sink in.
I'm replacing the rear with a modern NECG peep, and putting a ramp + tall blade up front.  Skinner sights has a ramp that fits right into the old dovetail, making it easy, and then I'm not changing the orig. metal.

P.S. Measured, the left side of the dovetail is approx. 0.32" and the right is 0.34" so .... maybe it's knocked left to right?

My Rev-O-Noc is left to right.  BTW, I have both versions of Rev-O-Noc .22 rifles.  The one that is an H&A 922 and the one that is a Stevens Favorite.  Both need the bores relined.

Okay, it looks like I've got the correct direction.

Any tips on getting the old dovetail out?  It's been in place for 100+ years.

Barrel in a robust vice padded with cardboard(cereal box) with the dovetail an inch or so out of the vice. A 3/16” pin punch and a small hammer will knock it right out. A small quick sharp blow is needed to get it moving.

You might try introducing some Kroil or other good penetrating oil to the sight and dovetail and let it sit overnight or longer before attempting to remove the sight. In particular if trying to save the sight. Also use a brass drift punch, or squared off toothbrush handle to help in that regard. This has worked well for me, best of luck!

SBoomer,
I've got aluminum jaws on my vintage English Record vise.  A quick, sharp blow with a small hammer?  Thanks, I wouldn't have thought of that.

rkba2nd,
I've got some brass punches I bought to drift out pins on vintage revolvers, and the sight's been marinating in Kroil overnight.

Here's a pic of the vise, without the soft jaws.

Thank you all.  I used a small hammer w a brass punch.  At first no joy, but after 6 or 8 strikes I got movement and then it came out.

The "small hammer" is something I would not have thought of, so thank you for that idea.

question, is that left to right looking from the butt towards the muzzle, or looking from the muzzle towards the butt?

Left or right is determined by standing behind the object; the exception being manure spreaders and mules; those you stand to the side of. Smiley

I did it from the shooter's perspective; i.e.if you were holding the rifle.  That worked in this case.

Haas's book said the ejector in these has issues.  Mine, kind of has issues, and kind of works great.  I'm not sure anything can be done.  I'll post that as a new question shortly.

When you post a thread on the extractor, I’ll post some pictures that show kinda how it works.  I converted an H&A 932 (same size as the 922 and the Rev-O-Noc) from .32rf to .32 S&W by rebarreling and converting the block to centerfire.  I had to make a new extractor for it and took pictures because I have another 922 frame and parts that’ll need the barrel relined and an extractor made (along with a bunch of other stuff).
