New Ballard Wood
May 26th, 2024 at 3:08pm
Print Post
I decided to restock my #4 weight Ballard .22 for bench use.  I made a 2" flat bottom forend and found a shotgun butt stock which came from a member here.  The old butt stock has a large piece missing where it joins the tang and a 6' long crack on both sides that I just glued up after it opened more after my last session.    The new stock was for a pistol grip so I removed some wood to get it to fit my straight grip.  A few more coats of finish and it the rifle will be ready for the range.  It is going to have to beat the 6 shot .66" 100 yd group fro my low wall to earn a trip to Spokane.  Hew are before and after shots.

If it shoots good groups I don't care what the Chinese lady thinks?  I just needs to beat those British rifles at Spokane.

Jack, you can always use the stocks for the steak fry, if it doesn't shoot Wink And maybe throw that Chinese lady a piece of meat. She might cheer up  Smiley

I sent her Jacks pictures.

At coffee this morning, the guys said Jack did it just to bug the rest or us Ballard lovers.

I don't know what British rifles Jack is talking about but I'll be using a Ballard or Stevens.

Wes,

You know me and ugly rifles.  If they shoot then they are a thing on beauty!  I did just use some aluminum black on the butt stock spacer.  If I shoot it a Spokane, I will put paper bags over the stocks as I proceed to shoot back to back 250s.  The Canadians all seem to shoot BSAs.  Probably because they are loyal to the queen or king!

Jack, like a 1200.00 rifle rest, those ugly stocks will not make your Ballard group any better.

At least a 1200.00 dollar rifle makes you look cool.

Dang, I was going to talk with Will about his rifle rests.  Maybe I should dip the butt stock in the hydro dip wrap stuff too. How would this pattern look?

Too late now, but you could have removed maybe 1/8" off the bottom of the pistol grip and left it a pistol grip on a straight grip frame.
I vote to buy a piece of nice walnut and build a forearm to match that buttstock. Then your Ballard will not just shoot well, but look good doing it too!

It was really a straight buttstock for a PG action.  The stock had no PG.  all I did was remove about 1/2” at the action and taper it.   Maybe Wes will feel sorry for me and bring a nice piece of forend wood to Spokane for me. Here is the stock before I shaped it

That looks like what someone would have done to fit a pistol grip frame with a straight grip stock like Marlin did for the #6 Schuetzen, and first year #6 1/2 Rigbys that were both pistol gripped actions with straight grip stocks.

For we Eastern rabble who won't be there to see it, may we not get an uncensored view of its new "form follows function" fore end? Is it rainbow colored 3D printed? (If so I would hide it too.)

Here is the original version.  Don't tell Wes Turner I posted it uncensored.  The butt plate spacer has been blackened.

Amigo Jack,

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it seems that you've got plenty of wood in that buttstock to play with, if it was mine...I'd make a few aesthetic adjustments to make it a little prettier, but I think the big forend is just fine. Ultimately, the proof of the pudding is in the shooting, if your rifle will keep up with the rimfire wonks, who cares what it looks like!

Thanks Bob,

The proof will be in the groups!  I have just started looking to repair the butt stock that came with it and it may just end up as a display piece.  It has a couple of what I think are pewter inserts that match one on the forend, but there are bad cracks both vertical and horizontal that need repair and a large chunk missing.  I think there was considerable flexing when I was shooting it the last few times.  I do have this stock I could fit to it, but not my idea of a bench one.

I shot it yesterday.  You were right about the forend.  The original shot as well as the flat bottom one.  The butt stock helped even though there was a Chinese lady yelling in my ear the whole time.  It did have the odd flyer though.  I think I will bring the Low Wall to Tommy’s.  I am going to  possibly put a set trigger in it.
I will do some carving on the Ballard stock to set the comb back like it should be. No cracks like the one that came with it

I'll assume you're resting it on the barrel half way between the muzzle and forestock?

The butt stock is better because its higher? CPA offers a high stock for Ballards. They look a lot better that the one you have now and can have any grade wood you want.

I am using the butt stock because it is not cracked and cost $35.  I haven’t tried testing it that far out.

Some of my Ballards have cracked stocks. Very common. They don't effect accuracy.
Yes, rest the barrel on on your rest. Might eliminate that pesky flier.

What model was that Ballard originally? Ballards with double set triggers need good original style stocks. What barrel is it? Original? Whos? What size groups have you been getting at 100 yards? With good ammo.

Before I began repairs on the stock you could see the 2 8” long cracks open up at the action by almost 1/16” just from resting it on the rear bag. There is a pewter bow tie shaped insert on top of the wrist that was loose. When I removed it it revealed a vertical split as well.  I epoxied that in place.  No markings on the relined barrel and the cast frame # does not match the innards.  The frame has the 2 little holes like a Pacific.  Groups with Tenex are close to 1”  without the single flyer  opening up the group to 1.5”.
The Stevens Pope low wall put 7 shots into .6” with the same ammo so it is coming to Tommy’s

Yeah, that sounds perty bad alright. Duck tape snap ties and wire?

I saw two ladies with little wiener dogs today at the range so I stopped to chat. Told them I just love them little Japanese dogs. They looked confused and said they were not Japanese dogs. So naturally I said well they are Datsuns aren't They? They didn't get it. They never did get it.  Sad

It was awkward. Nothing new for me...  While holding a door open for a lady at the Golden West Restaurant this evening I said to her, welcome to the Golden West Motel....

Really awkward. I didn't have to say anything. I could have just kept my mouth shut.

The Chinese lady can smile now.  I found a stock just like te original that is structurally sound.  It only had a small crack at the toe and a small hole just back uf the upper tang.  They are now repaired.  I will still do some reshaping of the shotgun butt stock.
