homemade .25-20 WCF

I made this rifle from scratch last year. I bought a barrel blank and made everything else. It's fun to shoot . I have close to 50 cases for it and a couple hundred .32-20 to neck down.

Nice, glad to see the new guys doing something. First rifle build??
How about a little more detail on the locking lever and how it works. Rebounding hammer?
Maybe some range results.

Chuck, this is my second scratch build. The first is a scaled down bolt action, also in .25-20 WCF. It has a 1-turn in 14" barrel.

This break-action has a 1-turn in 10" barrel. One of my goals was to spend as little as practical, so while this twist rate is overly fast for the cartridge, the barrel blank was the only .257 offering Gun Parts had at the time. At 75 years, I wasn't willing to wait for a better option. Wink

I'm attaching images of the bolt gun and one of the locking mechanism on the break action.

Jim

Break action lock. It's rotary.

This was shot with 87 g jacketed soft points, iron sites at 25 yards. I have since modified the sights to make vertical alignment more discernible. Have yet retried those bullets. I have shot a lot of cast bullets but have not found a load that is consistent.

Machining on both examples looks good. Properly designed rotary latch just gets tighter under load, good idea.
Don't see an extractor but maybe I am missing something.
More traditional designs will get more kudos on this forum but a good start. Keep at it.

Looks like there is a dished spot above the chamber so you possibly can use a tool or thumb nail to remove the fired cartridge.

Correct. Simplicity was a goal. No parts to fail there. Cool

I too, like your rotary latch design. A slight eccentricity would make that lock up like a vault. I’d love to know how many clean kills on whitetail sized deer have been made with the 25/20. I once waited a full week for a perfect shot to present itself. Dropped like a bag of flour.

Yes indeed, there are dual locking lugs up front, in Mauser fashion. 1045 steel.
