A follow up to my post in the 25-20 SS thread, I did a final head to head with my 25 Hornet high wall and 25-20 Win low wall this morning.  The new long throat in the low wall is going to take some work and maybe a different bullet while the 25 Hornet shot some good 200 yd groups.  Most were using 8 gr of 4100 and a Paul Jones 122gr spitzer.   
The Hornet gets the nod for the Spokane trip.  I hope Ron Smith is able to come since he built that rifle for the late Bob Zimmerman RIP.

Breech seating.  I wish I could shoot 25 cal at 200 yds that well using fixed ammo.  I only shoot 25 cal in the Spokane ISSA NW regional.  This rifle is quite a bit heavier than the 25-20 win and I need to shoot it offhand as well as off the bench.  Time to eat my Wheaties!

Why do people shoot cartridges with no roar or visible recoil?

I will try a higher velocity at my next outing.  1550 gos or so is as fast as I have gone so far.  I am having more consistent speeds with 4100 than 300MP in the 25s but the opposite with my 32-40s.  I am at the max seating depth with my current seater and not seeing engraving on the base band on the 25-20 win.  I need to modify my seater and do a chamber cast but that will have to wait until after the ISSA match. I stil have 3 .22s to pit against each other, a BSA MKIi, a Ballard with a #4 weight octagon barrel and a similar weight Stevens Pope barrel on a low wall. Since we are not shooting that diabolical 50 yard match any longer I don’t need the fast loading and ejection BSA and have ample time for the older rifles.  It seems I end up with a case in the action of the low wall each time I use it. Once case doesn’t seem to bother it but I need to remember to block the opening with my thumb as I grab the case.

I have one of those, but I forget about it until too late   I am just so fumble fingered I even drop those.  I might make a foam plug and see if that helps.

If I were upside down the blood would rush to the empty cavity in my skull ans I would pass out.  I started thinking about it.  A very dangerous task, but a wide rubber band would probably do the trick.

I have to agree with both craigster and rkba2nd. That is a nasty looking chamber, and it was John Louis that told me about the jewelers tool.

The really big question is, why is there a threaded section of the barrel between the receiver and the barrel shoulder?????

Setting the barrel back won’t help the visible threads. The top lip on the receiver was milled off to accommodate the fat barrel.  It has a short chamber and the block cams the bullet into the rifling. I am not sure but I assume the Stevens Pope barrel was added to the action somewhere other than at the Stevens factory.  It had a headspace issue when I got it that prevented the round from fully seating. This prevented it from firing on the first strike unless you closed the block on a shim.  Luckily I had another block that was a perfect fit. 

I am planning on a new avatar once I get home from a short trip.

This is why I am not messing with this rifle (except possibly adding a set trigger once my MVA order shows up)
