Schuetzen in .25-20 WCF?
May 4th, 2024 at 8:38am
Print Post
Just wondering;
I’ve seen a couple of CPA’s in .25-20 WCF, but I thought this was more of a hunting cartridge than a target cartridge.  I know that .25-20 SS was a target cartridge, but it’s very different than the WCF cartridge.
Any comments from those wiser than I?

I agree, great round, I’ve had very good results with both, also 25wcf brass is a lot more attainable compared to 25-20ss.

It’s the different twist rate that spells success, allowing for heavier bullets to be used.

To make note that he should not make his choice based solely on cost of or availability of brass.

I really like them The 25-20 WCF is A great little case. With neck problems is seeming to be my go to for offhand anymore. I like 26" short fat barrels over the longer barrel, keep that weight in close.......

He's a curmudgeon. I like curmudgeons. It's becoming a lost art.

I'd do a schuetzen in 25 20 wcf without hesitation. I'm already shooting one in 25 20ss. I have Winchester lever guns in 25 20 wcf and they shoot great. With a little persistence and keeping my eyes open at gunshows I found more brass of both calibers than I probably need. When I see the stuff now, I just walk on by and leave it for somebody else..
I'm thinking a gun in 25 hornet would be fun too.

The .25-20 Single Shot and .25-20 WCF shoot the same ballistics. The .25-20 WCF was developed by Winchester to allow chambering the .25-20 Single Shot cartridge in a lever action rifle.

The caliber is more wind sensitive even with the 120 grain bullets, but do not let this deter you from trying it. The cartridge works well at both 100 and 200 yards.

I shot it the first season of bone cancer due to the reduced recoil fearing further bone damage. I enjoyed the season with the challenge. I went back to the .32-20 CPA once the cancer was under control strictly because the bigger bullet catches the edge of the next ring for a higher score.

I made the brass from Starline .32-20 brass:
1. - Anneal
2. - Neck down using the .25-20 seater die with the seater plug removed (Imperial Sizing Die Wax recommended) Use two steps partially sizing half-way down.
3. - Size down again using the sizing die.
4. - Trim and deburr.

I had some .218 Bee brass, folded the shoulders trying to size up.

I plan on doing a 25 caliber shootout tomorrow to see which rifle is going to win an all expense paid vacation to the Stars and Stripes Schuetzen Park in 9 mile Falls WA for the NW ISSA Regional at the end on June.  The rifles are my older 25-20 Win Low Wall with a 10 twist barrel and a recent throat job and my Ron Smith built 25 Hornet high wall that I got last fall.  I have 2 spitzer bullets to try. a 118Gr NOE and a 122 gr Paul Jones.
