Contemplating a 38 Ballard XL build but don't know what twist I will need for 158 to 200 grain bullets. Any suggestions?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

The originals were a very slow 1:36" twist, but I'd go for a 1:16" or something close if doing one today. Originals were also a fairly large diameter heeled bullet so groove diameters were around .375". Today I'd make it a .357" groove to be able to use more common sized bullets that aren't heeled.

20 is all you need. My LW is a rebored original barrel in 20 twist and it shoots the 35875 & 358315, both 208 grain, w/o any tipping. But, I think you'll find most std blanks will be 18 twist.

The 38 XL and 357 Max, are excellent all round cartridges. If I had just one rifle for target and hunting, that would be it.

I won a 18:1 .38 barrel which I mounted on a Rolling Block.
It would shoot a 310 grain bullet and knock the Rams down at 550 yards with a light recoil using Swiss FFFg black powder.
