32 Ideal Caliber

For a long time it seems that 32 Ideal brass and cartridges have always been is short supply. I have a habit of buying obsolete brass and cartridges for rifles I don’t own (yet). Who developed this cartridge and what factory rifles came chambered for this cartridge?

Thank you in advance,
Joe

It's my understanding that Stevens developed it, at least in part to save 32 RF barrels. One of the reasons that the groove is .323,instead of .319/.321.

I think I have a article about it somewhere, I'll look.

My understanding is that the cartridge was designed by someone at Ideal. Maybe last name Bartow?.  1900-03 time frame.

Stevens, Remington, Winchester all had rifles chambered at the factory.

Yes, I’m still looking for a set of dies!!!   Grin

That would be Barlow, the owner of Ideal. But not sure he developed the cartridge Stevens introduced?

I don’t remember where I got that tidbit, only that the name was a nod to the Ideal  company. Possibly an article introducing the cartridge?

Stevens certainly had a hand in it, but given the attitude of the times about chambering rifles with other manufacturers names, if someone else was involved and wanted it to sell, it makes sense to give it a more generic name.

I have a Winchester Highwall with double set triggers in .32 Ideal. It has a #3 28" octagon barrel. The bore is 323, 1-18 twist. I believe the .32 Ideal was developed by Barlow who own Ideal, but was marketed by Stevens. I believe an Rapine mould in .325 155 grain has potential.

Have a reamer for 32 ideal.  Made another barrel for my 44 1/2, also have a 32-40 and working on a 38-55 for it. That will make a 3 barrel set.

I read once that the .32 Ideal was first introduced to lengthen old .32 Long Ballard and Wesson barrels that needed chambers cleaned up. Not sure who invented it, just seems odd that a tool maker like Barlow would have been involved.
I can't find much that says who was involved in the design of this cartridge though.

Here's a picture from the 1912 Ideal handbook on the .32 Ideal.

Well I'll be darned! Guess that is pretty good documentation of who designed it!

That passage is also quoted in Bruce Grant’s “Single Shot Rifles”. Probably where I remember it from.

Shot the 32 ideal in a Borchardt for a couple years. Brass made from  Rocky Mtn. Brass.  Worked well but at $2.50 a pop pricey.  SOOOO  I went to 32-357 Mag  within a grain to the 32 Ideal and bombproof!   My reamer with a 1/2" straight  before taper, looks like a mini 32-40 . Hopefully I will get a load in BP done for it to shoot fixed, even though breech cut. Have used taper bullets in fixed loads that I jam into the lands and have gotten 5/8" groups 5 shots @ 100 yds....good enough for this guy offhand!  11.5 gr. Lil gun works very good........

May the Bullet Gods be with you.......

I have a couple of .32 Ideals.  One is on a low serial number Model 108 action. I've logged two of them with even lower numbers. The 1896 catalog depicts the cartridge but the 1889 catalog does not.  So its' introduction at least predates 1896.  I'd argue for 1894, based on those serial numbers.

I've read a claim that Reuben Harwood had something to do with it.   The early 1890s was his period of greatest activity, but I'm skeptical.

Brass can be made from 5.6x50R, if you can find any.  I've done it, but as 5.6x50R can also make .25-25, I'm saving the few I have left for that.
