Are there any other powders that will work as good as 4759 ( and available) to load fixed ammo for 38-55?

5744 is a great powder and if you can find it, Shooter's World Buffalo Powder is equivalent and cheaper.  Tom

I have a 38-55 and a pound of 4759 I would like to try in the rifle.
I cannot find any load data for it and a 255 gr. lead bullet.
Any suggestions?

I saw a pound of 5744 at Scheels. It was a shocking $60! Glad I bought a giant jug a couple years ago.

A old target load from pre 1990's is 18.5 gr 4759, with bullets up to 280 gr.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

In Lyman's 42nd edition I found loads for 4759: a 250 gr bullet with 10.5 gr gave 1050 fps, and a 265 gr bullet with 21 gr gave 1600 fps.
Lyman's Ideal book #40 has loads for 4759 and a 255 gr plain base cast bullet:
starting load = 10.5 gr @ 1050 fps and max load = 18.5 gr @ 1500 fps.

Regards,
Joe

Part of the velocity and pressure, is the groove diameter. The old, original ~.380 groove will give a little less of both.

One more thing that I will add about 4759, is that I found that weak primers work better, sometimes much better than other primers.

Remington 1 1/2 & 2 1/2 where the best, F150 came next. 4759 is a uncoated powder and easier to ignite than coated powders.

I use 16.6 gr 4759 with a 296 grain jones in my 38-55 with a very old barrel. Not a fast twist modern, Don't remember the twist. Been probably 25 years since I measured it

IMR 4227 is another alternate to 4759. It has a similar burn rate but is a little denser so won’t fill the case as much. I’d prefer it over 5744 because 4227 like the other IMR powders are single base (nitrocellulose) powder so burns at a lower temperature than 5744 which is a double base (nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin) powder. That may have some impact on barrel wear.

After several years of testing various bullets and various powders I arrived at the 250 grain Accurate sized .380 and 14 1/2 grains of 4759 for my 200 meter matches.
