"New" Stevens 44 & Ballard #3

I snagged a rather cute Stevens 44 at the Baltimore Show last weekend. Low serial (#6516 Phil, if you're still keeping track), 7 o'clock extractor, .32 Long RF. Judging by vivid case colors, mint bore, and pristine metal/wood finish, my guess is it spent most of the last 125 years hidden away in closets.

The same show yielded a Ballard #3 Gallery, .22LR. Patinized case colors on receiver but vivid colors over entire breech block. Very tight lockup, nice crisp 2 3/4# trigger pull. Minty re-lined bore. (Gary Quinlan, who sold it to me, laughingly speculated it may have been lined by C.C Johnson, but who knows - only non-Ballard marking on the bottom flat is "726" stamped by hand). If initial backyard test firing is any indicator it should shoot! (Fecker Small Game scope installed by me on existing scope blocks.)

They're both very nice finds. I really like the Stevens, hard to find in that condition. Congrats.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Gary Quinlan was setup almost exactly across from me. I didn't spend a lot of time walking the floor but I did find a Maynard Creedmoor in 40/70. I sent my table mate to take a look and he bought it. I brought home a Harper's Ferry 1841 rifle with some issues that turned out to be a really good buy once I got home and really got into it.

Yes Gary, I'm still adding to the database.  VERY nice early specimen that is.   What front sight?  With the Lyman tang it should be a Beach.

Phil

I am with Marlinguy, both are very nice rifles, but of the two I really like the Ballard the best.

One of my biggest regrets of moving from Virginia is not making my annual pilgrimage to Timonium. Very nice finds.
