Picked up a #3 sporting rifle in 38-55.  What style tang sight would be correct, post or ladder or both?  Thanks

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Not sure what a "post" is? But a vernier tang sight is pretty common. A Marbles or Lyman tang sight is seen also, but limits the distance you can shoot.

Picture of the original Hepburn long range vernier tang sight with 60 graduations per inch.

MVA tang sights would be very appropriate and can also adjust for windage.
The new tang sights are 100 graduations per inch.

The original Hepburn tang sight did not have a windage adjustment.
Original Hepburns had a wind adjustment front sight.

With an aperture front sight you can insert a cross hair, or a post or different size aperture inserts.
Again a MVA front sight would work well for you.

MVA sights are high quality and accurate and are wildly respected.

The Original Sight Co. sells exact copies of both vernier tang sights in mid-range and long-range, plus the windage globe front sights.

The Walker Hepburn sights were also offered and showed up especially on the Scheutzen rifles.  This one was made in the Ukraine and was sold by Parts Unknown but is hard to find now days.  Excellent sight.  Kermit Hoke made a very similar copy as well but they are no longer available either.
