Stevens Walnut Hill

I acquired a Stevens Walnut Hill .22LR with a JW Fecker Scope. It is missing the front sight and the butt plate. Are these fairly easy to find?  How do I tell if the stock is the original stock?

The 417 steel buttplate is going to be pretty hard to find. I have a project 417 myself and I've been looking for one for awhile now. The front sight should be a Lyman 17a. The Lyman 17a front sight is still being made today, you should be able to find one easily.

If you can't find an original steel Stevens buttplate, you might look at Vintage Grips for a Stevens hard rubber copy they sell. Just measure height and width of your stock and compare it to dimensions listed at VG.

Note that there were two butt plate styles that I've observed: a flat completely checkered one and a flat plain steel with shallow horizontal grooves occupying the middle third of the plate.

Having recently gone through the same exercise as the OP I can feel his pain of the search. I did find that monitoring eBay and posting WTB ads here and there turned up a few candidates for substitution. Flat steel buttplates abounded in a previous time.

My Walnut Hill came to me with a  1 1/4" shortened stock (all else with the gun being correct). I first acquired a repro semi-inlet stock from CPA, but found that when the original stock was shortened they reduced the size of the buttplate accordingly, hence the search. Then I recently stumbled onto a nice original stock on Gunbroker with its buttplate intact which put paid to my dilemma. The new CPA repro stock got traded for a nice original Stevens 44 stock that I also needed so all's well.

My 417 also has a cut down stock. A Mossberg model 44  US buttplate is very similar to the Stevens plate with the horizontal grooves. While not correct it will look okay on my rifle, and fits perfectly. The Mossberg plate probably will be too small for a 417's stock that's not cut down.

A 417 has been on my want list for a long time.  I don't remember ever seeing one for sale.  Now that I'm a geezer and live in California, I probably never will.

I hear you. I too wanted one ever since as a kid I saw a picture of one in a book. Circumstances, other interests, money, etc. always intervened until I acquired this one a couple years ago. I missed out on a .22 Hornet version (WTH was Stevens thinking?) a couple weeks ago when the bidding took off like a rocket towards the end of the auction. Maybe should've hung in there but I do hate bidding wars.

What do these guns usually sell for?  I was told the scope was probably worth 600.

I missed out on a nice 417 on GB a couple of weeks ago too. Someone wanted it more than me. The search continues

Waterman, how come you couldn’t own one is California?  It’s just a single shot. Not like it has a 100 round magazine.

many sellers won't go through the California DOJ  hoops to transfer to an FFL.

There are some requirements for selling a modern firearm in Ca. now that make many guns nearly impossible to buy.
