New CPA

Print Post
I took delivery of a CPA this week that I plan on using for 22 BPCR. Did some preliminary testing today and am happy with the results. Below is a pic of the rifle and a 5 shot group fired at 100 yards outdoors in windy conditions with help from a couple of wind flags.
Looks under new ownership CPA continues to build great rifles.  Smiley

Very nice looking rifle. They do tend to shoot very well. Lovely wood on that thing as well. Even has a very nice looking scope on it. What for scope is it?

my CPA .22LR  also has a Douglas and shoots similar. Getting used to opening the action and not letting fired the case fall in the guts was a learning experience.

What is the finish on the receiver? It is not color case or?

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

I don't see any blues in the picture, lot of black and silver.

44 1/2 style action is a compromise. CF to RF quick change gives up some fictionally with the  RF block. You will probably get used to rolling the gun 90 degrees when opening. They drop right out .

Extracting  the block vertical sharply works until one slips by causing a jam up.

I haven't had any issues with spent cases falling into the action on this or my other CPA. The High Wall chambered in 22 LR is a whole other matter  Cool

Schwartzstock Stevens used a different process. There can be a wide variety in colors with different makers using the same process also. As in Winchester and Remington. From what I understand in talking with some f the best, it is almost impossible to repeat the same colors and pattern of same, even on same receivers. MoJo magic, and what makes it so beautiful, to my eyes at least. You just hope for the best to your liking.

What I mean on the CPA you can pull one out let it fall on top of the lowered block insert a new cartridge & the spent case is pushed out of the action as the block is raised. Works well until it doesn’t.

Never owned a Highwall but expect function is why sometimes see .22 High-walls with the action side cut down. Can see it’s a potential problem Smallbore prone all strapped in, offhand less so.

By the way have only used Douglas barrels number of cast bullet rifles. I think being button rifled they are the most consistent performers long strings, accuracy equal to any barrel.

Just opinion can’t prove it.

I have never had an issue with a spent case falling into a high wall action but have with a 22 low wall and a Stevens 44. The high wall issue is not much room to grab a spent case that is only partially ejected.  I have a grabber tool to assist.  I sold my 22 high wall with a 9 o’clock extractor.  Too many other 22s

That is my experience too. I never ever had a spent case fall into the works on a CPA. I have used a few choice words when loosing one into the low wall.

Doesn’t happen often, my perspective is as a match director club monthly small bore offhand single shot matches & shoot the monthly CF match too. Have seen some things go wrong mostly due user not familiar with them .

Go out on a limb here, excluding national matches we probably have one of largest concentration CPA rifles any club. Some shooters have more than one and there are at least 2 dozen shooters using their rifles. One of mine probably the first around here, 1993.

Any rifle has its quirks, CPA less than most.

Last time I dropped the block on my Stevens Pope .22 Low wall there was a surprise mangled case wedged inside that didn't prevent it from functioning.

I'm thinking that I'd like to have one barrel in 38-55 and the other in 40-65.

Think I set the record for longest CPA delivery. Mid 1990’s Knew I was going to be working outside the US for 3 years. Put a dozen US Military rifles up for sale with a consignment dealer. 03’s & older.  Dealer wrote the checks to CPA as they sold.

Paul built my dream rifle. Pope style Schuetzen Fancy wood, etc. Engraving planned postponed until after delivery. 22 - 32/40 MVA sights. Parsons replica 20x STS. All the accessories, Mold bullet seater palm rest Pope style Dell lube sizer and more.

CPA shipped the rifle to arrive week after returning home. Everything perfect not a single issue .

NEW CPA OWNERSHIP... ?

Whatt..?

Did Gail sell the company?

One nice aspect of buying a CPA is going to Dingmans Ferry, and sorting through the available wood for a stock and then finishing it yourself.

RJ

PS My serial number is about 820 ish bought back about 23 years ago.

Yes CPA is under new management. I think, but don't quote me, the shop foreman purchased the company. I have been told that Gail still is in the shop helping out and such. Very nice people to do business with for sure. I need to make a trip up one of these days and have them do a barrel for me. And maybe take the time to pick out a piece of wood to have them turn a stock for me.

I ordered my rifle from Gail several years ago with two barrels in 45-70 and 22lr. I had them use exhibition quality wood that Gail selected and had them deliver it in sanded but unfinished condition. I thoroughly enjoyed finishing the wood myself with a beautiful tung and walnut oil finish. I get compliments every time it comes out of the case and it shoots really well. They had the rifle in my hands within 6 months and the rifles very first use was at the 30th anniversary Quigley match. I ordered the 45-70 with a Douglas barrel in a fast 1:15 twist. It has quite the torque in your hands but I’ve definitely noticed better stability beyond 600yds compared to my slower twist highwalls and sharps barrels.

I took it to a match (Columbia Schützenverein) a week after I picked it up, so that was CF at 200, and didn't get the chance to practice before. Had a couple of misfires and had to tweak the mainspring. Shot a 243.

I will use it for CF and LR scoped bench, as well as BPCR irons out to 500 on steel this month. So, I will see. At least I will get plenty of practice before those shoots.

I'm a German Feuerstutzen kind of guy, but can't beat the CPAs scoped bench. So...as they say "if you can't beat them, join them".

I just scoped another CPA (engraved Stevens receiver) with the Leatherwoid Malcolm 5x I just bought in the sales section. Wanted to put together a classic American Schützen for 200 OH.

I can shoot it off the bench reasonably well, but took the Lyman 20x off for the new CPA.

Scott, it's a lot of fun. We are less formal than most matches as we have it for 3 days and folks show up when they want to, and shoot any of the events when they wish to. Some of us are there for 3 days (like myself who generally brings 9-10 rifles).

BTW, based on your writeup in the last ASSRA Journal I just bought 3 bricks of the Lapua Midas + for my CPA .22 setup.

BTW, based on your writeup in the last ASSRA Journal I just bought 3 bricks of the Lapua Midas + for my CPA .22 setup.

Willi,
Sounds like my kind of match! I really would enjoy shooting with you and Chris one day  Smiley
I’ve been really impressed with Lapua Midas consistency over the past few years. I hope to read you also had great results.
Take care my friend,
Scott

That is a beautiful rifle!  I've never owned a scoped single shot. But at 66, my eyes are fading. It seems like every time I go to the range it gets harder to see the sights. I have tang sights on many of my rifles and they help a lot, but the front sight is still a challenge. Plain barrel sights - forgetaboutit!

For the last year or so I've toyed with the idea of getting a nice period scoped rifle for informal bench target shooting out to 200 yards. I've always wanted a .32-40. So been thinking about a highwall, Stevens or Ballard. I really like your CPA. A rifle like that in .32-40 would do well for me. I know nothing about scopes, mounts etc. Would that scope be a good fit for my use? Does CPA sell the scopes also?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,  I’m like you and seeing sights.  Scopes and mounts are not a problem.  Easy to understand with some research and folks here are always willing to help.  CPA can drill holes for what you want.  I seem to lean toward the older scopes rather than reproductions, although I’m sure the new have benefits over the older versions.
My 44 1/2 in process, 32-40 with a 15 power Lyman.
My Ballard in 32-40 with a 25 power Lyman.
Both scopes are very nice, with fine cross hairs, and do the job.
Bob

Good Morning Steve,
Thank you for the kind words. I see a 32-40 in my future  Wink
I have really bad eyes and could not imagine shooting without a scope. I am a proponent of period/target scopes on single shot rifles.
Take Care,
Scott
