Anyone out there work up a No. 5 Pacific Ballard action to
50/90 sharps? Original 45/70 Ballard barrel (terrible rough ),
rebored and rifled to gain twist 32 at muzzle by RKS himself.
Made breechblock from D2 plus all bits and pieces.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Shouldn't be a problem. I've had a couple originals chambered for .50-70, so a .50-90 wont be an issue.

Just a question, why did you choose to make the BB and other parts from D2?

First breechblock 3/8 cold rolled, the two halves.Warped way out of spec.Intended to caseharden . Oh well, live and learn.
Now a nice artifact in the glory box.
Friend supplied d2 slab, 6 5/8 sqr. by 5/8 thick and annealed.
Many hacksaw blades later and milling time on the ancient
Linley jig borer and out for hard and temper. Fits barrel face with
a very slight crush. Lot of work but much fun.
Thanks for comments, Rabb.

Hi Rabb,
Nice work - getting to this point!

I look forward to GT's reply to this one as he is building a .50-90 SS on the oversize Ballard action that he designed.  Wink

I'm rebarreling a Borchardt to .50-90 SS right now as well. Got a Green Mtn 1:24" cut-rifled bbl some years ago for this. Last weekend, after cleaning up the breechblock face, I got the chamber cut to proper depth for a nice fit with the BELL brass I have (.060 rim thickness). Working on making a new extractor now. I'm also in the process of building one of Rodney's Ballard No 7 kits. About ready to bore and thread the receiver on the lathe.

Hi Rabb, cold rolled steel is full of inherent stress's from the cold rolling process. If you are going to machine it and have it hold still  you need to get rid of that stress. Bring it up to 1100 degrees and let it cool slow. leaving it in the oven or furnace overnight is the best. At 1100 you will kill the stress but stay below where the steel wants to decarb. Otherwise, just make your parts out of hot rolled, it doesn't have enough stress to worry about.
I hope you did your homework on the D2, make sure it is tempered enough to not be brittle.
