Ballard Hunter's rifle

This rifle is in a shop nearby. Were these chambered for 45-120? According to the ad it came from Bozeman where it was hanging over the door of a hunting club....

I really doubt it is a .45-120 unless modified.  How the heck did it get into a German auction? Last year I bought a no. 4 Perfection that came off a ranch in Bozeman, guess there still are some jewels out there.

Ballards may be weaker,

Largest factory chambering was .45-110, so either they're wrong, or it's been rechambered.

And that 45-110 caliber would have been the Montana model Ballard . It would also have the cleaning rod under the heavy octagon barrel.

Marlin also offered the .45-110 on other models including the #4 Hunter, and #5 Pacific. Those done on the Pacific have caused some confusion with collectors as many think their #5 in .45-110 is automatically a 5 1/2 Montana because of the cartridge and similar features.

Was not aware of that Vall. Only ones I’ve seen were on the Montana, but it makes sense.

The .45-110 Pacific I saw had a very heavy barrel, but still not as heavy as the 5 1/2 Montana has. The owner was asking Montana price for it, and was sure it was a Montana, or wanted it to be one. But the serial number was way off the range of the Montana rifles, and a smaller octagon. Not sure if he ever sold it, but hope someone didn't pay the $10k asking price he had on it!
