I have tons (literally) of the 2" X 4" X 8" pure lead blocks that I would like to melt and alloy in batches then cast smaller ingots for 20 pound melters for casting. ANyone have DIY designs or concepts?
Thank you,
Charles

Not on a pot but for ingots I found two commercial muffin tins that are for the large Sams size muffins. Each pan does 24. They are perfect for my 20lb pots.

Personally, I render down my COWW, and other lead in
a Large stainless steel mixing bowl to which I added a bail, like a bucket. It will hold 60 pounds of lead, or lead alloy.

I use a propane turkey fryer for the heat which would be able to melt larger pot of lead than my mixing bowl.

Other's have used a cast iron dutch oven for larger batches of lead.
I, like Bob, use muffin tins to cast my "ingots"
They cost almost nothing at rummage sales.

I use a cast iron Dutch oven with the legs ground off on a propane burner stand.  Mine only holds about 40 lbs or so but they make them bigger.

A big flat bottom Chinese kettle/aka dutch oven. A Turkey fryer stand with additional weldeld leg braces and 4-5 muffin tins get it done. Just did 150 lbs. worth of alloy melt

I have a big melter such as others have described, but for "lead bricks" such as you describe, I find that a coarse blade on the table saw works easiest -- Just saw them in half lengthwise and stick 'em in the regular pot.

I have found that the log splitter works ok for breaking up bricks.

The turkey fryer looks good if I use a large ladle. Wondering if there are any direct pouring or bottom drain DYIs.

Thank you,
Charles

I cut a 25 lb. propane tank in half. Take out the valve, fill with soapy water a time or 2. Then a cut-off wheel.
Weld 4 pipe legs on the sides.
Made my own burner w/ black pipe fittings.
Made it a bottom pour by making a "needle and seat" affair with a long handle.
Muffin tins under. Muffins are ~ 2 lbs ea.
Crude, but it works.

I use a Dutch oven and a crawfish boiler/Turkey fryer heater.

I melt ~60-65 lb. at a time, adding the necessary amount of tin when the lead is melted.  I generally do 4 batches at one sitting, and use Lyman/Saeco ingot moulds.  I mix the batches and store them in 50 cal ammo cans-each can will store ~120 lb of alloy carefully packed.

I've used a 6 qt cast iron Dutch Oven on propane turkey fryer base for years to melt 50# alloyed metal at a time and pour into RCBS ingot molds to remelt in my Lyman 20# electric pot in house. Works great if not tipped over.

I went to the Goodwill and bought a cheap cast iron pot, and use a propane burner to melt down large batches of scrap lead into smaller ingots.
I have a mold made from angle iron to make triangle ingots, and also a muffin pan that makes 2 lb. ingots.

Since I have several retired 20lb propane tanks and a 400lb full tank I no longer use (fuel source) an idea is forming. Just need to decide if a bottom pour is worth the added effort over a large ladle.

Thanks,
Charles

I cut a stainless pony keg (7-1/2gal) in about half.
Fits very well over the turkey fryer.  I then use the turkey fryer AND a weed burner to go from cold scrap to molten.   Did very well for both 300 and 400 lb batches.
