I've owned 44 1/2 Stevens heavy barreled rifle (wears era Winchester scope) for years and want to start shooting? I've got brass and bought bullets just need help with powder and charge?
Prefer to load smokeless if possible.

PS: Gun is in great shape serial number on barrel and action don't match.

Recently purchased Original Winchester Model 1885 (papered from Cody & manufactured in 1890) with 3 weight 30 inch barrel in 40-60? Does anyone have experience loading and shooting this shell?

No experience with the .25-21.  But I have been shooting the .25-25 Stevens. The two are very similar, the .25-21 being just a little shorter.  Here is a pretty good discussion on the .25-25 that may be of help.

From my 44-1/2 Stevens, with the canonical 86 grain Loverin style plain base bullet, 6.0 grains of AA#9 was significantly more accurate than any load of 4227 or 2400 that I tried.

Same load did well with an 88 grain gas checked version of the same bullet from a different mould.

No information on the .40-60.

7.5 grains of 2400 with the 86 grain plain base cast bullet shoots okay in my rifle.
I  mistakenly loaded up 20 rounds of .25-21 with 7.5 grains of bullseye, not 2400, only fired two rounds before I realized something was wrong. There was a very loud report and with the last round the primer fell out of the fired case.  No harm to my 44 1/2 thankfully.  I  need to double check everything at my loading bench.

Years ago I studied loading data and loaded 25-21 with 9 gr 4227 BS. In a 44 it is way beyond it's capability so had to stopped. And with Bertam brass (which fell apart) I gave up on it before getting it right. So don't go near that level.
The foolishness of youth.

Addendum: every few rounds the breech block pivot pin would shear enough to make the lever loose. I would remove it and turn it 180 degrees and all would be tight again for a few rounds.

That load still looks pretty mild in Quickload.  Any 44 in decent condition should do that one indefinitely.

Bertram brass I won't defend. I was lucky enough to acquire a fat handful of Remington at a gun-show just after I bought the gun, I never had brass problems.

(Gun is a 44-1/2 BTW.  Still needs the trigger lightened up.  Maybe I'll get to it this year.)
