Summertime Chital

G'day all.
I wouldn't think that too many Chital have ever been taken with a Hepburn. Normally I don't hunt during the summer here as it is just too hot, the leaves & dry grass are crunchy making stalking difficult and you have to keep a sharp eye out for snakes! We have some of the worst here in Oz, nasty.
Anyway Chital deer are a tropical species so they don't mind the heat and when a friend asked if I wanted to have a crack at one I just could not resist. I was thinking about  using a HW in .45 Eley but decided to give the Hepburn .40-70SS a run as it's my go-to deer rifle.

I saw this buck bedded down at about 120 yds in tall dry grass with only the tops of his antlers visible, moving slightly. Luckily he was facing away from me and the wind was in my favor. I sat down and waited for him to stand up. After about 20 mins there was a slight change in the wind direction and he immediately stood up and moved towards some tree cover. I followed him in the tang sight and when he paused at the treeline I fired. It was a good heart shot at about 80 yds and he only made another 10 yds or so before dropping. I used a modified Lyman 406150 with HP (about 325 gr with 20-1). It always works well.
While looking him over I noticed that he was blind in the left eye with a old puncture wound probably from a rival's antler during a punch up. Those long antlers are certainly menacing weapons.
Chalk another one up for the Hepburn.

Congrats and neat story! I have a different set of crunch conditions. Stillhunting is nearly impossible with the crunchy show.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

What is it they say down your way "Good on you!"? Is that a typical buck or are his antlers exceptionally long? A beautiful skin for a vest.

Thanks for sharing. Those antlers would be tough to hide even in tall grass. A beautiful looking critter. And you bagged him with class!
