Ball & Williams Ballards

I just received a Ball & Williams Ballard that I bought a couple weeks ago.  It’s a 38 rimfire and I’m just curious if they all had left hand rifling?  Didn’t see anything about the barrels in the Ditcher book.

I have a Merrimack civil war era Ballard in 50cal. and it has left hand twist rifling.

I guess I figured it was the norm for the gun, but it surprised me to see the left hand twist.  The serial number on the barrel is the same as the frame, and appears to been done with the same stamp, so I had to assume it was the original barrel.  But just wanted to see what others had.
I’m still cleaning the bore but so far the rifling looks excellent, which has also surprised me.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I don't collect pre Marlin Ballards, but have owned a few in the past. I too was surprised when I saw the LH twist rifling, but I've seen it often enough to think it was done by more than one of the makers prior to Marlin.

Thanks Vall, was hoping you would comment.  Thanks

From what I have had a chance to look at it, it seems to be a nice solid gun.  Low serial number at a little over 1500.  But, the hammer, while it appears will work, looks strange and might not be original.  Looks home made to me, not factory.  Might need to correct that unless I'm shown they all look like this one.
Pictures.

Well, Bob, the "checkering" on your Ballard's hammer surely isn't factory work; on the other hand, I suppose some previous owner, having perhaps reshaped the spur, might have done his best to recut it.

The shape of the hammer spur looks similar, but as Bill mentioned that certainly isn't the correct checkering. And it appears there are some file marks maybe from shaping? Looks like some brazing rod at the tip of the hammer maybe also? Maybe if it's taken out of the breech block it might reveal more?

Thanks guys, you are confirming my suspicions, the checkering and there are heavy file marks on one side.  Vall, I thought this looked like brazing also but doesn’t look so much like that in person, but does look like welding.  I plan on removing the breech block tomorrow and see how much trouble removing the hammer is.  It appears to be the one piece block.

Thanks Steve!  The lands and grooves in mine look exactly like yours, along with the left hand twist.
Your hammer looks like what I would expect from the factory, although it looks like yours may have been repaired.  I’m now betting mine is a field replacement and a bit on the crude side!

Isn't Steve's a right hand twist?

Maybe I’m wrong, this is the first barrel I’ve seen with this twist.  I just went to my shop and looked at 4 barrels, a Douglas, BRC, one from Axtell’s shop and my Ballard.  All except the Ballard twist clockwise but the Ballard twist counter clockwise, like it appears Steves does.
I would call the three barrels right twist and the Ballard left but could be I need to be corrected.  Never really thought much about it until now.

Left hand twist is very common, All 1911's, Pope's, Colt percussion revolvers, Shiloh 50-90 1:22, etc.

Wouldn’t want to debate how common a left hand twist is.  Just saying I have at least 3 that go one way and 1 that goes the other.  Just want to know how to tell at this point what they are, don’t want to be saying anything that is incorrect if I can help it.  Steve’s, ndnchf, barrel appears to twist counter clock wise, or to the left, so what is his barrel, left or right twist?  Oneatatime thinks it might be a right twist barrel, I thought it was a left, so it would help us both to know. Cheesy

I too get confused on the left/right twist thing, that's why I just posted a photo  Grin

I don't know much about Ballards, but as far as I can tell the hammer has no repairs. I think this is the factory .44 rimfire hammer. I shoot it a fair bit and it works just fine.
