Just wondered. Surprising to me how many people here don't eat liver. Fresh deer liver I find excellent. We ate a lot of liver growing up. It was a real treat to fry fresh liver and onions on the campfire. My neighbor shot a nice buck a couple weeks ago. He threw the liver away. He got a blank stare. I'm hoping he gives me a liver next year.

Funny, in my family we never ate liver.... except in deer camp! I love coarse liverwurst and had a nice smoked version of it on a roll for lunch.

Here is Germany it is advised that hunters not eat deer liver from wild game due to cadmium. The autobahns surround all areas where game live. Currently it is also advised to not eat wild boar in many areas due to the fall-out from Chernobyl. Since the explosion in 1986 they are only now becoming more aware of the spread.

My team was in the woods (Southern Belgium) on a training mission at the time of the explosion. We had a unauthorized transistor radio along to monitor real-world news. When we heard about the explosion we sent a message back to HQ asking about the situation (the cloud). The answer was quite short; "Its all around you but not over you, don't drink the water"

What bullet did you use in your 40-2 1/2?  I finally have my Hepburn and Sharps in that caliber shooting a 330 grain patched bullet cast out of 40:1.  I was supposed to take them elk hunting this year but came down with Kidney stones a week before my hunt the first of October and am still fighting them as we speak!  Tom

I love liver and onions.  My eldest daughter (still a teen) has always loved it (and heart) as well.   Nothing wrong with tasty organ meats.   I tend to keep a lot of the wobbley bits from the critters I shoot.

As part of their waste-not-want-not philosophy, my mother cooked  not just liver but heart, tongue, brain, and all the other edible "wobbly bits".  And if mom and dad seemed to enjoy them, I never learned to, even liver.

My late wife, however, would cook or order liver and onions every chance she got.

Different strokes for different folks, as they say.

My neighbor shot a buck this fall. I knew he didn't like liver so I asked if I could have it. Said he threw it away. Said he threw it out out back. Wouldn't tell me where so I didn't get any liver. I would have warshed it off and ate it. My neighbor must really hate liver. I grew up eating liver. I like liver. They don't sell liver in the super market here in town.
Same day Elk and Deer liver is fabulous, if you like liver that is.

My great uncles loved squirrel brains and scrambled eggs. I managed to avoid their breakfasts and I never even saw how they extracted the brains. Just lucky, I guess.

I cut a deer liver in half and gave each beagle a half for dinner. Next morning they were both dead in the kennel. Never ate liver again…..and never will.

The liver's job is to filter the blood and break down poisonous substances, most commonly alcohol and drugs in humans.  But therein lies the rub.  In wild animals and even in some carelessly fed "domestic" ones, we don't know what they frequently ate.  And that's why in my opinion one should be very careful about the liver one eats.
