Barrel Reboring/Rifling

I have a very heavy .32 (slightly undersized at .317) caliber barrel with a fair amount of frosting. I would like to have it re-bored/rifled to .38 or .40 caliber.

What I'm looking for;

First hand experience with someone you've used, and how it turned out.

What I'm not looking for;

Reasons to fit a new barrel because .......

Reasons to install a liner because.......

I'm not a complete idiot, some of my parts are missing.

There are several good smiths out there. I am sure others here will give good recommendations. I used Norm Johnson for a couple of mine. He does good work and has a reasonable turn around time. Google him for more details.

Gerald Smith, RKS Enterprises, Wimborne, Alberta for single point cut, six or eight groove, straight or gain twist rifling with a continuous taper for an accurate choked barrel.

World class barrel makers as I have stated many times.

Jerry, a few years ago I ringed a barrel. It was .33. Ron Smith (RKS) rebored it to .38 for me. At Spokane I shot this group from a clean barrel while Ron watched. Distance was 200 yards. Ron announced that there was a recall on my barrel.

I don't know if Gerald does the same high quality work Ron did but I would take a chance as he most likely uses the same machinery and methods.

Thank you for the replies. It looks like RKS will be the one I use.

How are you guys getting a barrel from the US to Canada?  Last time I looked, barrels were on the non-export list, and you needed an export license to ship them.

I was wondering that same thing this morning also. I have no intention of doing anything that isn't completely legal.

Call Gerald Smith.

403 507 1060

He should be able to advise you of the procedure for shipping firearms internationally temporarily to a gunsmith for repairs.

RKS Enterprises in Wimborne, Alberta, Canada has barreled numerous rifles for Americans, Brits, Germans and Australians.

Also safer to ship it with the wood removed to prevent transport damage (unless you need a new forearm fitted to the new barrel or the barrel profiled to the old forearm).

Seems like Ron used to ship "spiral cut hollow metal cylinders" or some such back in the day.

Regards,
Joe

And this is exactly what I won't get involved in. I've spent almost 69 years staying out of trouble and I will continue to do the same. I'll not risk all I've worked for for any reason. I'll put this idea on the back burner for now.

Besides, I already have an idea for a different project. Grin

I'll chime in and suggest Bobby Hoyt in Fairfield, PA. He's an older gentleman who's been specializing in re-boring and re-rifling muzzle loading and single shot barrels for about 50 years. He's locally renowned and seems to have garnered a national following, but doesn't advertise - word of mouth has kept him busy for decades. A member here had a barrel done by him last month and he's very pleased. Google him.

His shop is pretty impressive: three boring machines, four rifling machines (cut rifling of course), and four lathes. He works solo so expect a wait that can be anywhere from a few days to a few months - think Harry M. Pope.

Thanks, I remember hearing that name now that you mention him. I'll definitely contact him.

Ron Smith has legally shipped (hundreds per year for over fifty years) long bored grooved steel blanks to the USA by correctly designating  them as "bored and machined steel cylinders".

It is INCORRECT for him to designate them as "Rifle Barrels" since they have not been profiled as rifle barrels, they have not been threaded to fit a firearm's receiver, and they have not been chambered for a rifle caliber.

So please DISCONTINUE indicating someone is doing something ILLEGAL when you do not know the laws and regulations.

The laws for the export of sold or purchased firearms do not apply here either.
Contact ATF to find out what the procedure is for the "Temporary Export" of your firearm to  a licenced gunsmith to do repairs.

Several years ago I got in trouble for sending a customers rifle back to Canada, seems the law had changed after 9-11. I got a one time waver after filling out a form that was mostly about missile technology. In the spot that asked for country of origin I put down that it didn't exist any more. The Rifle was a Siamese Mauser. I was told that if I wanted to ship guns or gun parts out of the country I would need to purchase a permit for $2250. The repair on the rifle was about $150. The whole law change was not about protecting our country but about another way to get money.
I have only used my rifling machine one time in the last two years so it is up for sale.
