Got to fix the forend!

I picked up a high wall in 25 Hornet today with some moulds, re-de capper, and a Weber seater.  The rifle has a Neidler firing pin modification and a set trigger with a no 1/2 cock hammer.   The barrel and barrel work is from Ron Smith.  I will probably replace the scrap wood forend!

Do you or anyone know who made the re-de-capper?

I don't know who made it and there are no markings.  I got it from Schuetzenmeister's estate so no help there.  It is very well made and takes standard shell holders, the decapping rod works with 32-40 cases just fine, but changing to large rifle primers would take some machining to make a couple of parts.

At least I assume he made them. Here are the two, and you could see one of em with his name on it. they came with  a rifle I Believe was from his estate.

The "R Weber" mark looks to me like something done on an engraving machine, like many jewelers use.  I'd guess it was done just to establish ownership, just in case someone was tempted to "liberate" it.

They are nicely made.  You do have to take it completely apart to change shell holders though.

Doing some further investigating, the action is not a factory coil spring one.  There is a plunger in the rear of the aluminum forend hanger to assist in keeping tension on the lever.  Ron Smith liked to fit flat spring actions with coil spring modifications,  The barrel is marked 25 Hornet RKS 05.  The action has nice case colors.  I guess I am going to have a shoot-off between this rifle and my 25-20 Win low wall.

being it was brass material like the breech seaters he made and came in the set with the rifle I'd assumed he made it.
Meyers sold me the rifle and tools.Maybe he knows.

That's a nice rifle and kit Jack. It deserves a less utilitarian looking forearm.

I hope to find a block of wood at the gun show in Centralia this weekend.  If not there is a hardware store in town that might have what I need.  I should be able to route out the square channel for the hanger and then use my 1” router bit to fit it partially around the barrel. I will probably shoot it as is until then.  To make the existing one slicker, Bob covered it with clear packing tape!   While the rest of the rifle looks like Ron Smith work, I doubt he did the wood.

Might check with these guys in Olympia Jack. They say they have some smaller pieces, and maybe have something thick enough for a forearms in scraps?

Forget the back up sights; add some back up lights! And turn signals too! Those picatinny rails are supposed to have all their slots filled!

I did pick up a 2”x5” x 22” long piece of walnut locally a couple of days ago.  It should make 2 forends 2” deep. I think that wall be enough for the RKS hanger.
Too many projects. I wanted to make one of my breech seaters in 25 Hornet and ended up making 6 brass bodies (in progress).  I messed up one and had to repair it so it will be the one I use. That is why I have 7 or 8 high wall seaters!

I am surprised you have not picked Westerner's stash of walnut. He used to have tons of it.

Too expensive to ship.  I hate doing woodworking, but have made forends for round barrels.  I mounted a router upside down in the table of my little Makita table saw that allows the use of the fence. A 1” Grizzly router bit and away I go. Sandpaper on a wooden dowel as needed.
The piece of Walnut I got was less than $30 with tax

Jack, you need to take that hanger stuff off there and return it back to the way the creator made it and intended for it to be. Aluminium has no place on antique single shot rifles. Same goes for plastic.

The forend is done.  The front 10 inches is not touching the barrel.  I needs to be darker someday, buy I am hoping to make it to te range tomorrow.

Aluminum was considered somewhat like unobtainiam in the time frame we are dealing with. Almost like a precious metal. Why it is/was looked down upon baffles me. Possibly high cost at that time?

Westerner being an iron worker might bias his perceptions and he fails to follow Harry Pope's guidance to  modify single shot rifles to make them more accurate.

I am a shooter striving for precision and accuracy (not a collector) so I frequently and willingly modify bubbaed single shots.

And Westerner is advancing in age and may not be able to hold up those heavy iron single shots much longer to shoot offhand.

He might learn aluminum is lighter.

Jack, your new forestock does not match up well with the rest of the rifle. Now if you were to replace all that Canadian style stuff with a traditional forestock and paint the barrel black you would really have something. I have a few HW mainsprings if you need one. Leave the ugly bitched up rifles to the Canadians.

I would not need a flat spring since Ron installed a coil spring and the holes for the hanger would accommodate a homemade spring to prevent any lever droop is needed. I would need a way to secure the forend Wes.  Maybe a rubber band made from a bicycle inner tube.

Bite the bullet and buy a Miller target rifle. John has two but does not use them. Think they were Dave Purcells. I gave him, John, a Neal Rice breech seater for one of them.
Classy stuff and you would take them over the hurdles at the matches.

When you're shooting the Miller dress up like Mathew Quigley. Yer covered. You could drill a hole in the side and mount a hammer.

I could cut the spur off of a high wall hammer. And pretend it is a striker action.   Maybe add a shroud to hide it.

Those decappers were made by Russ for his own use, so he put his name on them.  He made a re/de-capper in .25-21 Stevens for me, and he built a .25 hornet for me on a Ruger #1 action and used the engraving machine to put the caliber on the barrel.

I have it in the back of my mind to try and make a similar re/de capper. With the one I have you would need to remove the screw at the bottom of the brass barrel just to change the shell holder as the rod that contacts the primer protrudes into the bottom of the shell holder and is all that keeps the holder from slipping out of the slot. My thought would be to make the brass body in 2 pieces so by loosening a couple of set screws the top portion could be removed to change primer size or  shell holders.  I have too many irons in the fire right now to put that project on the front burner but as soon as I can pick up some 3/4” aluminum stock to see what it takes to bore out the shell holder slot. Brass is too expensive to experiment with.
