Zettler

When I read Greg's note about the Zettler that he is working on, I remembered that I wanted to post a couple of pictures of my Zettler that I recently finished up and got shooting.  It was a real challenge, especially getting all the springs and screws packed into the small breechblock, but it came out quite nice.  There is some fuzz I noticed on the pictures, but you can see how the action looks finished.  It is a very unique and nice looking piece.

Bruce,
That looks really nice!  it was a subliminal message to you  Wink as you mentioned a while back that it was either getting close or it was finished.  Mine are a ways out but maybe one or two mostly completed in the upcoming season... I have the calibers decided on.
Thanks for posting.
Greg

Did a search on Google and got a group of pictures of a Zettler with the action open but they appear to be of a altered version. Anyway, some good photos for view none the less;  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Bruce, Really nice!  Well done!

You make the tang sight?

Until now I had forgot you sent picture of the action when you were underway on it.  That main spring/sear spring looks interesting.  It is a neat looking action though.

My inherent greed could have been better kept under control had I not seen these photos.

Wonderful! Elegant! And sadly, not mine….sigh

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Beautiful rifle! Well done!

I had no idea the Zettler Bros. had a rifle and action of their own design? I knew they made barrels, and custom schuetzen rifles based on various factory actions. And of course they had the Zettler rifling modifications where they cut a small groove down each land to make twice as many lands and grooves.
I own a Zettler Bros. Ballard, but your little petite action rifle is really neat!

To me "Zettler Brothers" and "Gallery" always go together.  So I initially thought their very compact cartridge action was probably intended for that type of rifle, perhaps exclusively in .22 RF or common zimmerstutzen calibers.  Then Premod70's cited "HALP" photo set has one reference to it being a centerfire action, while another shows it on a .32-40.  Just how strong does this action appear to be?

Thanks for the great comments.  Zettler made a few variations on this action.  SSRifles has one that uses a sidelock instead of the internal works.  I think that is actually a better design.  The PBase site has some great pictures and the internals of these appear to be the same, but the outside of the receiver is different.

The strength of these actions is great.  They have a falling block breechblock that is supported by the receiver walls fully.  The moving parts are contained in an extension of the breechblock.  I've attached a picture of the internals of the action to show what is inside.  It is basically a set of Ballard triggers attached to one half of the breechblock extension.  You can see the mainspring is a small and strong V-spring.  It is also the sear spring.  I couldn't get it to work well in both applications, so I modified it.  I made a separate sear spring and gave the main spring a 90 degree bend and anchored it at the rear center of the extension.  It was quite a project.

The action has a lump for a tang sight base.  I had an old staff that I fit to the base.  It seems to work fine.

Bruce,
Your comment about seeing the spring is key.  Being able to see these things makes a big difference while building, still not always easy but, those buried in the depths of an action are a pain to figure out.

The nice thing is the gun works great, the triggers perform flawlessly, and it shoots as well as I can hold it!
