I don't know it it is a Pedersoli or not. It looks to be a leaf spring model by the lug on the barrel. If you look closely you can see how thin the metal was at the bottom of the barrel. Coil spring actions have a lot more metal in this area. The blowout on the barrel looks to be at the 7 o'clock position. I don't know if it was on overload, cracked receiver or brittle mat'l in the receiver. More info is needed to really know what happened.

the anwser was in a  above post.

"The story was the shooter heard that 5744 was a good substitute for blackpowder; he loaded it the same way he did black, by filling the case to just above the bullet base and then compressing it slightly"

And if that's the case it wouldn't have mattered who made the action, it would've come unglued.

I shoot a lot of 4198 in both H and IMR in my old guns.

Val, can you tell us what date or date range you mean for your “old guns” please?

Another side note and praise to the inventors and engineers that built the various actions with the shooters safety in mind. A good action should direct the gases and shrapnel away from the shooter as there is no steel made that can withstand the forces smokeless powder can generate. This Highwall did it’s job by blowing the majority destruction forward and away. Thank you Winchester as well as other thoughtful designers.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

All my single shot rifles are antique, although some have had new barrels fitted. So pre 1899 date, and mostly pre 1890 mfg. dates.
Ballards, Rolling Blocks, and Hepburns, except for one Sharps.
Pressures for my 4198 loads on my program all show under 20,000 psi.
Some of them are small capacity cases, which I don't use 4198 for as it works best with larger rifle cases.

Mike.

I would not want to be the "idiot" standing to his left when it blew! It is not my turn to be thinned out.
