#2 rolling block, changing caliber

Is it possible and safe to rechamber a number 2 rolling block in 32 rimfire to one of the center fire cartridges like 32 s&w or 32-20, along with changing firing pin location?  Thanks

No, you have to change the firing pin location to centerfire, regardless of which CF cartridge you chose. But either cartridge you mentioned is safe in the #2.

Marlin guy was not too clear, Yes, you can do it but you must change to center fire.

I was perfectly clear.

FYI - from my research, despite the "32" barrel stamp, #2 rifles are actually chambered for the .32 extra long rimfire cartridge.

YES!  no big deal.   Many years back I had a 32 RF #2 relined and chmbered to 32-20.  Changing the block to centerfire is pretty straight forward.  My kids learned how to shoot with this rifle and we have put many throusands of rounds through it over the last 35+ years.  My load is 11 grains of 4227 and a 115 grain gas check flat point.  Never had a bit of trouble and the rifle still shoots great.  If the bore is good it might just work with rechambering and an over size bullet mould.

Danh,

If you want to use the original bore, the first thing I would do is slug the barrel to be sure you know the groove diameter, thus the bullets you will want to use.  Also, check the twist rate so you can calculate the length of bullet that will stabilize at the speeds you would be loading in 32 S&W or 32-20.  The groove diameter for the 32 rimfire seem to range from .308 to .315 based on what I have read.  No sure about twist rate.  I like George's idea - line it with a .312 groove and chamber to 32-20, or maybe a .308 groove and chamber for 30-20 (better bullet selection).  Also, you could get a faster twist rate, say 1:16, so you can shoot heavier/longer bullets than the 32 rimfire bore will allow.

BTW, you asked your question very clearly.  Some of the early responses apparently did not read your thoughts completely.

I have a #2 that was in 32 RF  that was in a bad state. I rebuilt it and moved the firing pin location to CF, and sleeved the barrel and chambered to 32 H&R mag. Turned out very nice and a great little shooter. The reason I went with 32 H&R was I already had the reamer and all of dies and components and did not have purchase those for a new caliber I did not have.

Thanks for the help.  The bore is pretty nice, now I have to figure which direction to go.

One option not discussed is to leave it original and make reloadable .32 extra long rimfire cases. Its a very accurate cartridge. I've discussed how to do  this several times here on the forum. Yeah, its a bit of work, but once made - they can be reloaded many times. Or, for less work, just convert the block to centerfire and make .32 extra long centerfire brass. I've made a lot of these too.

I'm curious - ndncf, please share with us how to make 32 long rimfire centerfire cartridges.  Sounds like something we all need to know how to do.  Always looking for something new to try.

Thanks.

I've made several posts about doing it.  Here is one.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

But use the search function to find other discussions. Search for "32 extra long".

The centerfire equivalent of 32 extra long rimfire is .32 Ballard Extra Long.
