Would the tang numbers indicate a model 56 044 1/2 ?

Hey schrafe , if you remove the the front stock you'll find the model stamped on the front of the receiver .   The tang numbers should match the Sr. # on the under side of the barrel.   ... skwerl

Serial number I'm sure falls into the general run of the 44-1/2 sequence.  No reason for it not to, IMHO.

Since the model number appears to be stamped on the lower tang, I’ll guess the front of the frame is stamped 0 or double 0, along with the EX stamp. I will also guess that the left side of the frame has the Trade Mark Stevens stamping.

Nice looking rifle! It also appears to have a full round barrel, has the rifle been re-barreled? .22 LR?

Serial on barrel is 3426, same as bottom tang. I’ll pull the forearm in a couple days, and see what marks are on the front of the frame.
The bore is really great I don’t think it was ever shot much!

Don't I see the screw on the side of the receiver for the 22 ejector?

That seems very unusual to have a full round barrel, but it could have been a special order.

This rifle could of been sent back to Stevens for a re-barrel after Savage took over. Does your rifle have the Stevens Arms and Tool stamping on the barrel or Stevens Arms Company? Is the serial number on the barrel just in front of the forearm or is it underneath it?
