Fitting a 44 1/2 Lever to a 044 1/2
Feb 2nd, 2023 at 3:41pm
Print Post
I will be picking up a 044 1/2 soon with a brazed fix on the lever.  I see that CPA has all of their 44 1/2 lever styles back in stock.  I think my question may have been answered in an earlier post, but would it be possible to fit a 44 1/2 lever to a 044 1/2 or would it just be too problemattical considering the dimensional differences between the breech blocks and internals of the two actions?  Thanks

You might consider having someone graft on a more commonly available favorite (slightly thinner) or 44 (slightly thicker) lever to your original 044 1/2 lever by welding. Then it could be polished and color hardened, or you could try to match the finish of your rifle if it has patina. This is what I would probably do.

Thanks.  Any recommendations as this type of work is outside of my skill set.

After thinking a little more about this, there’s a good chance that the favorite and model 44 levers are made of cast steel. This would make welding them a bit problematic. I am sure that it still could be done. Perhaps the 044 1/2 lever could have the brazed repair cut out and be repaired with extra steel? I don’t know of anyone that does this kind of work, but I believe that there are companies that do restorative welding work on guns.

You will need to reduce the width of the lever to fit the action. Basically this is the portion that fits into the action that flares out on a 44 1/2 lever.

Then you either need to bush the link from the 044 1/2 to fit the lever since it is thinner and you need to fill the side to side gap. Or use a 44 1/2 link and modify it to fit the 044 1/2 breech block.

The camming portion of the link will also need to be fit so that the hammer will not jam when lowering the lever. If you use a 44 1/2 link.

Next alternative is to modify the breech block to accept a 44 1/2 link.

Side note, if this is a 25-20

I bought that rifle on gunbroker in a buy it now back in July.  A week after receiving the payment, he decided not to sell and refunded the credit card payment a day before emailing what he had done.

He waited a couple months and re-listed it.

I'm morally certain that the 44 and Favorite levers are malleable iron, and thus not suited to fusion welding.  Probably also 44-1/2 levers.   CPA would know.  I'd like to be wrong, but......

About 25 years ago before I could afford Ballard's and High Wall's I built up an old Stevens 44. I bought a pope style lever casting  for a 44 1/2 from Paul Shuttleworth. I cut the original 44 lever off, cut the 44 1/2 lever off and welded them together with a wire feed welder. I am by no means  a great welder. I never had any trouble. Years later I read that you can't do that. Won't work. I'm sure glad I didn't know it wouldn't work before I did it.

Seems to me that the original Lever is one way or another going to be modified.  Can you have someone, or if you can weld, try running a weld on the end of the lever? You're going to find out real quick if it can be done.  My little Wire Feed needs a good Pre-Heat.  I've welded the Bottom Tang of a 44 Stevens.  Good luck!  David

I am sure that Stevens started out with the same lever casting/forgeing for the 044 1/2 and the 44 1/2. it's all in the machining I  Looked into this you cant remachinine a 44 1/2 into a 044 1/2 the extrator cut is to wide on the 44 1/2. the 044 1/2 lever is .500 thick with a .200 extartor/link cut the 44 1/2 is .580 thick with a .250 e/l cut. like they say never say never it could be done make or shim the extrator shim the link the lever tenison spring would be a trouble spot and the link ears would be very thin Ken

Yes it is a 25 SS and yes your story does sound coincindental.  Altough this was a straight up auction with no BIN as I recollect.  I monitor GB on a fairly frequent basis for Stevens and I don't remember seeing this 044 1/2 last summer.  But again it does sound coincidental and it could have escaped me.  This purchase has just about put me off buying anything from GB ever again because I paid for the rifle on October 20 and I will just be picking it up today from my FFL.  In part, some of that had to do with the holidays and some had to do with inefficiency on the part of my FFL.  But it did take a solid two months for the seller to connect with my FFL for shipping.  There was always some excuse to be heard and I was on the brink of calling the sale a fraud.  However the seller did remain polite and did come through, and who the hell really knows what goes on in situations like these.   As a result of all this I do find myself more than a bit fatigued with GB purchases these days.  Buyer beware

Have you checked with CPA, Gail might have the proper lever.
And or to be very helpful to you and might also check Rodney Story.

I remember seeing the 044 1/2 on gunbroker last fall and thought about bidding on it but didn’t due to the lever. I’ve bought a fair amount of guns and other items from gunbroker sellers, was only burned once by a seller not taking a picture of the over size hardware screw used in the breech block in a favorite. This favorite wasn’t really much use to me other than a parts gun. Another seller claimed that he was sick and it took about a month for him to ship some ammo, but I did finally get it.

Here’s a couple of pictures of a customized 44 1/2 lever. It was customized by cutting and welding, and was color hardened.

I figure not much goes unnoticed on GB from the gang here on ASSRA.  I wasn't really looking for another rifle when I bought this one, however I did have a bad case of the "Jonses" for a centerfire 044 1/2 and the small frame rifles don't frequently come up for sale.  I already had a rimfire 044 1/2 so now I suspect my small frame forged Stevens single shot desires will pretty much be satiated.  Thanks for the pictures of the 44 1/2 lever and thanks to everyone for all your advice and encouragement!
