Borchardt strikes again

Went on a cow elk hunt this week and took my Borchardt 30/40 Improved that Curt Hardcastle built for me a few years back and also a 50/70 RB that Curt worked on this year.  When I got there the guide told me that the elk were hiding pretty good and I might have to shoot to 200 yards so I decided to hunt with the Krag which was sighted dead on at 200 yards with 200 grain Nosler Partitions.  Hunted all day and saw 8 elk but the only one that gave me a shot was a big 6x6 bull and I had a cow tag.  Just about sundown the guide decided to take me to a meadow to see if anything would come out just before dark.  While driving the ranch trail in a side by side we came around the corner and sure enough, there were two cows.  He stopped and I bailed out and set up my shooting sticks and proceeded to give here 200 grains behind the shoulder at just under 100 yards.  She staggered and went just a few yards and as I was closing the action on a second round she died.  We were able to drive right to her with the Polaris.  I had walked 3 miles on numerous short hunts and set in ambush in a dozen spots while the guide went through the brush to try to drive one by and wouldn't you know I would end up getting one next to the road!  I wish that I would have had the 50/70 but it was back at camp as it was too hard to haul a second rifle in the Polaris.  This is the first elk with the Borchardt after bagging several mule deer with it in the past.  Tom

Congratulations Tom, That's just the way it goes some time. I enjoyed building that rifle and it gave me the desire to build a light Sporter for myself. I decided on a switch barrel Sporter for myself one barrel in 25-35 Ackley and the second is a 30-40 Ackley. There will be 2 different barrel contours so I had George at Treebone carve the butt and 2 forearms from the same blank I purchased from Kenn Womack. The barrel, and butt stock are fitted along with one forearm. That's as far as I can go until some of the projects in the are shipped.

MMMM cow elk. Some of the finest table fare that a person can have.
Better eating than any post rut bull and a much easier tag to draw here in Nevada.
Congrats!

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Add a big Idaho baked potato with a little gravy, and corn on the cob.  Mmmmm...  Life doesn't get much better than that.
