This first picture shows the notch cuts, as they progressed.

Once the base had all the notches cut, I need to cut the slot in the adjustable portion of the sight.  This second picture is just showing how I did the slot.  This slot aligns with the center of the pivot pin.  With every slot being aligned with the pivot point, the locking plate should work easily in each position for elevation.

Photo 3, here can be seen everything I've been trying to explain so far.  That first or lower notch can not be used until the base dovetail is machined.  At that point the the inside bottom of the base will be adjusted to allow for its use, giving me the lowest sighting position.

Photo 4 and 5, I got the locking plate made far enough that I could be sure all the notches would align and lock in for the elevation adjustments.  A couple different views of the locking plate.  The plate still needs final shaping, a screw hole made and the base needs the dovetail machined, along with final shaping and cleanup of all the surfaces.

Been a few days since I posted so I though I would show where the gun is at this point. 

I've been working with the wood and getting some finish on it, but it still has a way to go.  We are having a fun shoot this Saturday and was wanting to get it together enough to put a few rounds through it there but, we will see if that happens.

While finish was curing I polished the action and other parts to 400.  I have Diane Scalese lined up to engrave this gun, or another that has been in process, in July.  Just need to see where this one is at, in the next couple weeks, to see which goes to her.

So all these pictures are where it is at now.  A couple things to mention are that the front, of the right side, has turned out pretty dark in the pictures, and it is darker, but not as dark as it looks here.  The forearm is the opposite.  It looks really light, and it is lighter, but not as light as it appears here.  I think some of this is the light position when the pictures were taken.  I had noticed the forearm being lighter before I started finishing, hadn't noticed it prior to that, so I did darkened it with some dye, not stain.  You will see it it comes much closer to matching the left side than the right.

I had another issue with the wood forearm.  My shop is really dry in the winter with the heat always on.  There is a screw in the normal position in front of the action, but there is a second in the tip.  The wood must have already picked up the moisture from the spring air enough that the front screw would not work.  I originally threaded the screws directly in the barrel.  I ended up yesterday dovetailing a screw mount in the barrel for the rear screw and refit the wood to the action.  I don't mind working with wood but it can sometimes be a real pain!

Calledflyer...it has been a dream rifle, I spent lots of nights dreaming about how I was going make this thing work! 

Richard....we have talked about the final finish.  I was originally planning case color but put the question to Diane as to what she thought.  She think the case color is correct for this gun so that's what it will most likely be.  I am still concidering plating the butt plate and the steel forearm nose piece. Probably one of Mahovsky's process's.

I mounted the scope on the gun today.  I only had flat bottom scope blocks so made a set of adapters/spacers that are fitted to the radius to the barrel.  They got pretty tall which works for now.  I found I needed the height in order to be able to cock the hammer.  It's a little bit of a stench to use it but will work for this weekend.  I now know how I need to shape the new hammer for use with the scope so all was not lost in making the adapters.  I will make a low set of blocks that fit the barrel contour later.  Here's picture of the gun and scope ready for the weekend.  Still needs more finish, this is 3-4 coats and buffed down with fine steel wool for now.  Next  week I will continue with the finish.

It actually looks better than I thought it would with a scope!

I finally was able to track down this thread... I'm not a regular on the Collecting SS forum so was not aware of this until I saw someone mention it on one of GT's build threads...
