Stock blank for a new project

I just purchased this blank for my next personal SS project. George at Treebone just carved a Low Wall set for me from the same tree. It was a spectacular set when carved. Life is to short to shoot or build an ugly rifle.

A very close friend of mine used to always say that it should be against the law to shoot an ugly rifle.
He had a very extensive collection of original Steven's Single Shot Rifles and he also practiced what he preached.

Claro, if it is, does produce some very beautifully grained wood, the downside is the common, very open grain, which makes filling the pores difficult, and fine checkering even more so. All can be overcome, but reasons why European, Turkish, etc walnut are favored by stockmakers. I, for one, couldn't leave that stick behind, that is a given.

What did he charge you to do that work~?  Don't you now have to have it fitted and finished~?
I have no problem with the finishing, but I am not capable of fitting one~!

I don’t know what they charge, but usually a machine turned duplicate still has work to be done to it.  The wood needs fitting to the action, final overall shaping needs done and buttplate installed.  The turning gets things close and removes lots of wood for you.

I will have George at TreeBone Carving turn the semi-finished blanks. The Borchardt is one of the easiest stocks to fit to the action for me. I have a fixture that I put the rough turned stock into and do all the finish inletting in my mill.

If you scroll down on this page you will see my personal Borchardt 45-90. This new rifle will have the same butt stock pattern but a slimmer forearm and a lighter contour barrel. The average cost for having the wood turned is $250-$350 depending on if an ebony tip and stock thru bolt are required. Once I have the turned wood in the shop I will post photos.

Considering all the time and money one can get into a restoration, or custom built single shot rifle; I'll never use plain wood for the stocks. I love good looking wood, and try to get as high a grade as my budget will allow.

Lurked for years and have never posted...
I must say that is a beautiful piece of timber.
AS regarding shooting an ugly rifle.......
I have never seen one, however I have seen many that were just barely pretty.

It would be fantastic if you could do a video of the entire process from start to finish. Stock making is like a black art to me.

I am looking to  get butt stock and  fore end from  Treebone to go  on  an Husqvarna  rolling block action, that I will fit  with a 40-65 chambered bbl.I want to use this  rifle  for distances from 300  to 500 yards (the limit of our range) and  will couple  the  rifle with a  Shaver peep sight and tunnel fore sight,  my question is  what shape of butt stock should I order to get good alignment for shooting at those distances, and those sights ? Thank you, david a.

I think you would be well served by either the Midrange or Silhouette butt stock. The Midrange comb is slightly lower and lacks the cheek piece but is still it high enough for the ranges you will be shooting.
