40/82 Load data

Helping a friend get a 40/82 1886 (yes I know it is not a single shot  Grin) shooting. Any suggested smokeless starting loads? Could I start with data for a 40/65? I can work with BP but fear he would fail to clean correctly and I would hate to see a super nice '86 go to ruin.

And for anyone that may be interested from the serial number it appears to have been made in 1888.

Thanks in advance

The twist on an original 1886 in 40-82 was for a 260 grain bullet and I am not sure if anything much heavier will stabilize.  I really like #5744 powder in blackpowder cartridges.  I am not sure what bullet you will be loading so cannot give a charge.  Tom

I shoot 27gr of 4198 and a custom 350gr accurate mold bullet in mine. Not long range mind you but sufficient for deer at 100 yards. Your mileage may vary. Start under and work up from there...
