.32-40 spitzer alloy

What alloys are you guys using for breech seated spitzer bullets in the .32-40?

In my black powder target rifles my general rule is 20:1 for blunt bullets and 16:1 for pointier designs but I'm not sure how valid this is for shooting breech seated bullets with smokeless.  I've been using this rule of thumb for my .32-40s as well.  I'm just about to fire up the casting pot this morning so would appreciate any experiences.

thanks very much,

Chris.

Thanks John, that is very good to hear.

I should add that there are 2 bullets I'm going to cast today.  The Hoch 322205 which is a Darr style spitzer ( I've been using 16:1 and have a Weber seater for the CPA I shoot it in ), and my new David Mos .32 mold that I recently got from CPA.  It's sort of a semi-spitzer I guess.  I was thinking of 20:1 in that one as I will probably use it in a rifle that I don't have a seater with any leverage.

I have always used 20:1 using smokeless powder or black powder.

Tommy Mason did extensive testing using 25:1 vs. 22.5:1 vs. 20:1.

He determined his best accuracy was with 22.5:1 with only very slight gains in accuracy with the Weber breech seated Paul Jones .32 spitzer bullets with smokeless powder.

Yes Tommy Mason is one of the 1240+ shooters group.

Every rifle has a preference all of its own and it also has allot to do with bullet fit. I have found by own extensive test results that the harder you can get with a lead and tin alloy the better your results will be. Often times we tend to relay on other folks results and then won't do our testing. So when seeking to achieve the very best in accuracy it can then never be reached.

Chris please let us know what you find out.
I have a close friend who actually gets better results using 1-40 and he too has tried them all.
It never ceases to amaze me in regards to just how much every rifle is so completely different from another even being per-say exactly the same.
Example being my 25-35 has the same barrel, profile, length, twist rate and size and the bullet is also the same.
I actually re-barreled both of them to be exactly the same and his likes 1-40 and mine likes 1-16. Same powder choices have been tried as well as the same primers and yet so completely different in which alloy they each like.

Jerry Barnett and I were talking at Golden about bullet, as he said. "temper".  He thought his semi-spitzer designs would shoot a lot more consistently/accurately with the 1:20 over a softer blend.  His idea was that the semi-spitzer designs needed a bit harder alloy to resist, as he called it "slumping".

Another factor the harder alloys, more tin, fill out better & generally cast a better bullet. Having said that I used to cast 1/25 almost everything except harder bullets for higher velocity’s. Have moved to 1/30 & don’t load for speed.
