Sharps Borchardt help….Wells??

Print Post
What I know, Sharps Borchardt 1878 chambered in 32-40. Poked around today while cleaning and found some additional marks. Under the rear brass butt plate there was a series of numbers and a  name.  Numbers matched the forearm, barrel, and stock. So I am assuming they were all done at the same time. The name was WL Wells and then the date 1936.

Anyone have any info or ideas? Thanks!

Very nice.  I suspect the barrel was recycled from a Marlin Ballard#5 pacific based on the tulip and cross drilled hole under the forend.
Any other markings on the barrel?
Has the barrel  been lined?
I have never heard of a 32-40 Ballard Pacific, so I don't know if my suppositions have any merit.
Very interesting rifle

In the stock wood, the number 525 56 0327 is formatted like a Social Security number, while on the butt plate it is inscribed as just a block of numbers.

Perhaps one of those sets of numbers on the butt plate are the maker, the second set the original owner.

The only other mark is the “32-40” top of the barrel and it doesn’t seem to be re-lined by visual inspection….

If it is a social security number, on the very likely assumption that the number was assigned before 1972, it originated in New Mexico.  Does that ring anyone's bell?

A word of caution. I received my SSN in '62, part of a batch my employer got for us. I was living in S.C. but my number indicates Georgia. I don't know if intense research would uncover this sort of thing years later, but the state a number indicates may not be accurate.
