Hunting with set triggers on single shot rifles (Read 1559 times)

	This is in response to a couple of people with some concerns regarding this possible problem. First I’d state that it’s most likely just what you’re used to based on my own experience. I’ve used set triggers almost exclusively on all my lead bullet target rifles & on the 15 to 20 s.s. Varmint & hunting rifles I’ve built since around 1965. As to usage in the field , years ago crows,ground hogs,jack rabbits, many thousand prairie dogs, & in later years coyotes I can’t remember a single conscious memory of ever setting the triggers before taking the shot ! So if you have any concern re: hunting w/ s.s. Rifle with set triggers just take it out and get used It and when you do hunt with it & slay some critter ,you’ll be able to go home & try to remember if you set the triggers or not !

	I agree, all of my rifles including those I hunt with are DST. It is second nature to set the trigger just before firing. I also think it gives an extra level of safety. I hunt from a ground blind, so there is always time to set the trigger. I have no experience hunting in heavy cover where the opportunity for a shot is very short. Mike

	I totally agree with hairtrigger who has apparently developed the muscle memory to be able to successfully use set triggers. Being a long term cast bullet benchrest competitor more times than it is being set unknowingly simply from my own muscle memory and countless hours of shooting. I can fully understand this same thing taking place for hairtrigger from his long term hunting experiences using a set trigger.

	I have owned two German single shot stalking rifles and both of them had set triggers. I guess the Germans had no problem hunting with them.

	Like being used to a double trigger shotgun, takes a bit to get it sub conscious

	Ummmmmmmmm, little common sense applied should cover your concerns. Keep your finger off the trigger. works for me, and I am 72 and counting. Rich

	Personal experience would be the key to use or none us as well as the type of hunting and field use. They are not for everyone and I much prefer a single trigger that I have worked on to suit my own needs.

	The muzzle loading fraternity is surely larger than the single shot cartridge crowd, and the front stuffers have a lot of hunters in the field with rifles that have double sets. Rifle styles from the 1750's to late Hawken. Hunting with them is a non issue. kw
