"NEW" long range. 22 sport.

A local fellow is trying to get me to shoot these "precision rimfire" steel gong matches.after looking into it it seems these fellows with their "chassis " tactical guns think they've invented long range  accuracy with .22 rifles never seen before.i watched  few goof-tube videos and none of these guys shoot with flags when evaluating accuracy.Just excuses of "wind got that one I bet"
The sport is probably very tough but I've yet to see one of those whizz bang guns shoot better groups than my Ballards,BSA MK2 or CPA Schuetzen rifle.
I'm tempted to enter a match with my Pope style 44-1/2.

Ranting I know......

Go ahead; show up with your Pope-style 44-1/2 and show them.  In the end, there will be some who will want to club you with the butts of their black guns; but, hopefully, they will restrain themselves.

What is this world coming to?

Cba,
I would jump all over that opportunity! My boy throws a party every fall that we call the Patriot’s Weekend. He and all his friends show up with a full arsenal of black plastic. Their version of target shooting is perforating/spraying a perfectly good target at 35yds. I was shocked on the last day when one of them said he had brought a Garand and ammo. I jumped on the quad and ran a 2x2 target out to 350 yards, then sat down with a Widowmaker to enjoy the show. Everyone shot 8 rounds with issue sights. Out of their 32 shots exactly ONE hit. I sat down on the makeshift bench and held right center on the edge of the target for my 8 patiently timed (painful to them) shot. Winds were steady at 15-20mph from the right.I had the cockiest one of the bunch jump on the quad and retrieve the target. 6 holes made a plate group and the other 2 were 4” left of the group. After reviewing my group, I mumbled “GD automatics, that’s embarrassing, I wish I had my old single shot”.

You would have to have the correct equipment. Your gun and scope would not be competitive it that game.

The last couple of our clubs varmint matches I have used a bone of a #2 ballard (relined with a TJ liner), CCI Std.Vel., and a Litchert scope and have kept even with those expensive barrel tuner, multi $1k scoped, Lapua center-x, new fangled long range,22rf rifles. At first they are curious and laughing under their breath but they go away pretty quietly when they see the scores.

Not sure how one would find the time if also trying to become extremely competitive in but one sport. Makes me wonder just how often various clubs hold a Schuetzen  match. Our club has one every month from Feb. to Nov. and in between its all about getting out and learning to shoot in the very worst of conditions that every day presents.

I was told by the WCW Kenmore "range expert" a decade ago that .22 LR was not accurate at 200 yards. Bet him $180.00 on the spot that it is, all the money I had on me. I also had my BSA MK 1 International with me with good ammunition. Invited him to the next 100 and 200 yard .22 LR match at Paul Bunyan, Puyallup.

He and several other WCW Kenmore members showed up and enjoyed themselves. At a later match, I shot the first perfect 100 yard score with my BSA. Sure bent the noses of those with their three or four thousand dollar Anschutz rifles.

BudHyett I sold my CPA Model 52 Schuetzen Rifle to a close friend along with what it liked to shoot the best. He took it to 100 yard Rimfire Benchrest match in Richmond Ca. All bolt guns made by Bill Myer's, Calfee, Anschutz and others at the time. They were actually making fun of him when he showed up to shoot that rifle in that match. Until he ended up cleaning everyone's clocks and he ended up winning that match. It had a Shilen barrel with a match chamber and a #4 full octagon barrel and of course aleo having the pronged butt plate it being a Model 52 Schuetzen rifle.

CBA,
Take them up on it, set your range flags and enjoy the moment. Smiley  I've had a few of the boys with high end bolt guns join us at my 400 yard line, they won't stoop as low as us and take their scopes off their Vudoo's, 40X's and 52's but we do threaten them with our Ballards, 44's and Low Walls shooting irons.  I've seen some real impressive targets done with both vintages of rifles. (we usually start with gongs but the real proof is when you put up paper, hit what you're aiming at and have a group to compare - not as easy as it sounds)
When no one was looking I put a Unertl Programmer on my ugly Ballard (the striker) and shot a few groups that may have bettered them, but I'm keeping that a secret for now. Wink
Let us know how it goes.
Greg

We had an informal egg shoot after Easter at 200 yards and my CPA with 8x Junior cleaned up.of course I "cheated " having flags up.No vodoos but a couple Bergara Trainers,CZ's and my own 40x in a buddies hands.
These guys shoot out to 300 yards in their matches at times.id have to get dope and probably change my front base height to point waaaay low.i fear the drop is spot much my objective lense will hit the barrel.
Lots to consider.

CPA shooter,
Put taller blocks on that rifle to prevent hitting the Objective from hitting the barrel.
I did that on my Martini MKII so I can now go from 50feet to 200plus yds with the 2" Unertl 20X no problem

I had some taller blocks on it originally with my 20 power Unertl but the cheek weld was wrong.  I threw some low mounts and the 8x junior on there and it's just perfect offhand.

If I'm going to go long I'm definitely gonna have to get the higher mounts back on there

We shoot a 50/75/100/150/200m 22silhouette match every month and our single-shot falling-block rifles with 10X scopes are very competitive when we do our part.
We also shoot a 200yd target match and the same is true there. First match was won by a Win Model 52C with iron sights. Second match was won by a DZ Arms Hepburn. Will be interesting to see who wins the next match in April. 200yd target match I shot in GA in Oct was won with a CPA and 10X scope with a 298/300. My 293 score was out of the money. The more I shoot my 22s the better I like them.

Yeah, long range is fun with 22's. I've shot my Winder at ~300-350 with shorts, and hit a 'freon' can pretty regularly. The ones they use for test gas at the smog stations I think. 15lbs maybe? Fair bit smaller than a standard BBQ propane tank maybe. Been awhile ...

Anyway, what little I know of 'Precision Rifle Matches' in general, you're not likely to be setting out your own windflags, and it's not gonna be known distance either.

So you're gonna need 'dope', and a scope you can dial or hold off with. You're also likely to need to be able to shoot from a prone position with a bipod, or over barricades. Not sure how well a palm rest would work for that Wink
