Have (as part of a recent acquisition of a lot from an estate) a "Model 88-22 22LR only - single shot Marlin - nice little rifle and am toying with idea of keeping it - I know ZERO about Marlins and research on multiple forums thus far is a dead-end

Can't seem to find any info on it, everything re the Model 88 is for the semi-auto

It's a takedown, bbl is 23 1/2 SN M355 or M555 - 2 line mfr/model info -

Thoughts/ideas ??

I'm not an authority on this but I would bet it's a Marlin barrel fitted to a action I don't recognize.

A Marlin Model 88-22 is a semiautomatic .22LR

Yes, Stevens Crackshot #16 with a Marlin barrel. Stevens Crackshot #16’s were made in the early 1900’s, a boy’s rifle. Somewhat common for many of these rifles and similar rifles to have the barrel replaced with a different manufacturer’s barrel, due to the corrosive priming of the rimfire cartridges of the day ruining the bore without proper cleaning. I wouldn’t fire this rifle, it looks like the replacement barrel wasn’t fitted very well, there appears to be a gap between the barrel and the front of the receiver.

The side lever crackshot locks up much like a european flobert rifle.  Very weak action.  Oldwyo

Also, the left side of this one's action appears to be cracked right above the upper screw.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

In the closeup picture of the rear of the receiver you can still see the keyway cut at the 12 o'clock position at the rear of the barrel where that barrel would index on a Model 88 Marlin semiauto rifle receiver.
Here's an Ebay picture of a Model 88 Marlin barrel for sale:

A late friend shot an old Crackshot fitted with a Winchester 52 barrel and a 34-X scope in offhand matches for a dozen or more years.  He was an enthusiastic competitor in the Winter League, scoring over 1200 with some regularity.

I've got a side lever crack shot that actually locks up pretty tight.  It does ok with CCI quiet ammo. Anything hotter and it gets a little spooky. They weren't a strong action when new.
