German martini schuetzen rifle what do I have
Dec 2nd, 2021 at 3:18pm
Print Post
Hi new here, I acquired quite a few rifles from a few estates over the past year some of which are single shot rifles, the first one I am curious about is this martini schuetzen rifle with WW2 bring back papers, can anyone tell me more about what I have based of the pics and markings (not many markings). Thanks

It has the old standard BUG proof marks and the 172.28 is the gauge of the bore - it this case it will be for an 8.15x46R cartridge. It lacks the N for nitro proof but that doesn't matter for this cartridge just means it was proofed earlier. As many of the "bring-backs" it lacks the tang sight which were often stored separately but with a little shopping around you may find some modern clamp on scope mounts that will fit the ramp or can be made to with a little file work (the mounts, not the ramp!). How's the bore?

Very nice rifle!
I have a similar Anschutz I enjoy shooting, but was not impressed with the original rear (or front) sight.  Had Lee Shaver make up one of his economy Soule sights with a square mounting plug.  Works super!
Mike.

Bill Loos has many original Schuetzen rifle parts including diopter sights.  He was my source for the missing one on a highly engraved Martini action

For help, you might try Bill Loos.

I am no expert, but the information given is about all can be gleaned from the markings. Disassemble the action and take some photos and I sure more information can be decifered. The Germans had several different Martini systems many are not true martini actions but use an internal hammer to power the firing pin/striker. My guess is yours is one of those. I have 5 German martinis 2 are true coil spring powered strikers and the others are internal hammer powered by V springs.

Neat!  This is one of the nicest ones I have seen.

Rich

As an aside, I now own that nice rifle 4570 Mike was showing off.  It looks even better in Idaho...
