Original Sharp's stamps under front sight?

I am fitting an original sight to an original (1873 vintage) 1874 sporting rifle and the dovetail is a bit wide. In removing the old home made sight I see two numeral "2" s on each end of the slot bottom. Anyone have a clue what these stamps indicate? Since the slot does not look redone maybe just a #2 oversized? Anyway I am going to shim under it to tighten it up but it looks like about 0.015" needed.

Might have been trying to tighten up a too deep dovetail and the #2 stamp was the closest and first grabbed
