Wurfflein Rifle

I just saw one of these rifles at a pawn shop “ plunder and wish” outing. It looked  original but in great shape. Chambered in 32-40 with octagon to round barrel. Shortish tang sight and open type aperture front. I’ve never seen anything like it but it’s simple lines appealed to me very much. Anybody know anything about these rifles?

Depending on its other features, the Wurfflein you describe may well be the shop's lowest grade target model.

There's a fairly extensive article about them on the internet which you would likely enjoy reading - AFTER you go and buy it!

So……. This must be a rare sought after rifle. I just thought that it might be a classic old beater to pick up and hunt with for fun. I already have 32-40 dies, brass and bullets. I’ve always enjoyed the simplicity and clean lines of a single shot rifle.

I AM going to purchase the rifle. My gun fund is kinda stretched right now but I get the feeling(unanimous) that it would be a mistake NOT to buy this rifle. Thanks and if/when it comes home with me, I’ll post some pics.

Went back to look at the Wurfflein. The dude must know what he has. He’s standing firm at $1,650.00. Seems a little steep to me for a plain gun. Original condition make it MORE valuable? I’m out of my comfort zone on this one. Is 1650.00 too much?

Need some details. What sights? Hunting or target? What sort of buttplate? Condition of bore?  Got pictures?

No pics
Octagon to round barrel with globe type front sight
Tang mounted medium height rear sight
Nice stock with a little figure in butt. Lazy S curved steel buttplate. Wood looks like it has “ shrunk” because it sits a little low around tang and at the buttplate.
Steel has gray type patina with real wear patterns but not any pitting nor rust.

The "shrunken" stock could also indicate an over zealous refinish.  Sights suggest one of the firm's mid-rage target models.  Condition of the bore?  Caliber?  Barrel length? Any sloppiness between barrel and action?

In any case, based on what you've related, $1650 could easily be the upper limit of what's an acceptable price.  A fine bore in an excellent caliber (such as .32-40) and a tight lock-up would make that price more attractive.

Welldone, a Wurfflein catalog is for sale right now on eBay, item no. 264606011177.  Take a close look and tell us which model therein comes closest to what you're trying to describe.
