Marble Tang Sight Screw Table [1885 Low Wall]

Finally getting back to a 32-20 Low Wall. Finish is pretty beat, but bore is good, action is tight... Trying to mount a Marble Flexible Tang Sight [W1 base] on it -AND- use the correct screws.

IMHO, don't waste your time searching for the correct Marble Screw Set on Midway. The compatibility guide is a scream, the individual screw set pages usually don't have the screw size, and I felt darned confused.

Point your browser to Buffalo Arms, each set is illustrated with an actual picture of the screws -AND- they list the size / thread / length. I ordered two different sets.

I've contacted Marbles for the correct screw sizes for an original 1885 Low Wall and was told 10-36 x .342 and 12-28 x 2.235.... Referring to the book "The Winchester Single-Shot", Volumes I and II, the upper tang screw is called out as a 12-28, but the Sear Spring Screw is called out in Vol I as a 10-32, while in Vol II it is called out as a 10-36. On this Low Wall, the sear spring screw is a 10-32 [Brownell Screw Checker], but it is possible the original threads were trashed and a 10-32 tap was used to chase the threads. The threads aren't smooth, but I am not going to try recutting them...

The 12-28 x 2.235 length didn't make sense on my straight stocked Low Wall [1.650 OAL w/o sight] Further reading suggests it might be correct for a pistol grip rifle.

In Vol II, page 193 has a table [from ASSRA!] that has the mounting screws for the Flex sight. Of course, the current Marble's tang sight screw table uses current threads [no 35 1/2 tpi]. The date of the table appears to be either 1919 or 1920.

Where is this period Marble Tang Sight screw table? It shows the head diameter and suggests the screw heads have straight sides, not angled.

PS. Correct and lucid spelling is fun!

Staggered downstairs and measured the screw head counterbore in the Marbles Flexible Tang Sight Base "W1"

Screw Head Counterbore OD is 0.272 inch
Screw Head Counterbore Depth is 0.062 inch
Screw Head Counterbore Screw shank OD is 0.232 inch

Thickness of W1 sight base is 0.125 inch

NOTE: the Marble W1 sight base was listed for the 1894 - .25-35, .30-30, and .32 Special. The W5 is listed for all Single Shots except .22 CF and .30-40 [US Army], the W6 is for the .22 CF and .30 Army.

"The Winchester Single-Shot – Volume II Old Secrets and New Discoveries" by John Campbell, ISBN: 0-917218-91-4 Page 193 drawing titled “Tang Screw Sizes with Tool & Gage NO’S, Leaf & Flex. Rear Sight” [revision date 2/1/1900]

# Long OD Dia Thread Size
2 1.860 0.270 0.229 W 0.208 x 28
4 1.612 0.270 0.220 W 0.185 x 35 ˝
5 2.125 0.270 0.229 W 0.208 x 28
6 2.250 0.270 0.229 W 0.208 x 28
10 1.625 0.312 0.234 R 0.196 x 28
20 2.000 0.260 0.214 V 0.218 x 24
4-H 0.300 0.250 0.108 W 0.185 x 35 ˝

# Tang Sight Screw #
Long OAL of screw
OD - Screw Head OD
DIA Diameter of screw shaft under screw head
Thread – “W” Whitworth, “R” Round, “V” V shaped
Size - Decimal and tpi

NOTE: The above screws are “Type B”, which has a shaft that tapers from the underside of the head [Body at Head], down to the thread diameter of the threaded portion at the tip.

Screw Head Top Radius – the top of all screws has a 7/16 inch radius.

Screw Slot – image is uncertain, it might be 1/32 inch. [single line above "/32" in image]

NOTE: I looked down the screw hole for the Upper Tang Screw, and I did not see any wood of note, so that suggests any straight shank screw should work. YMMV...

Sure, the 1885 was designed by a giant in firearms history.  Smiley

Looked at the [lone] table, and there is a single vertical line that runs into the "/". So 1/32 is quite possible.

1/32 = 0.03125

Does anyone know where ASSRA might have information on the Marble Flexible Tang sight?
