Zischang Double-Set Trigger Drawings by John Wills

Print Post
The attached drawings were done by John Wills (Anchorage, AK). These were mentioned in another post on custom Borchardt rifles. I am also including John's shop notes on how long he spent on each step.

John ran his own business, John's Workshop, as a gunsmith, specializing in the repair and restoration of classic firearms. He was an artist in wood and metal. When restoring or replicating an antique firearm he could equal or better the work of the original craftsman. John was skilled in precision metalworking and made bullet moulds, custom hand loading tools, triggers, beautiful micrometer sights and even a telescopic sight.

As far as I know, there were at least four complete sets of triggers made. One of the sets were used by John to make a custom rifle. Michael Petrov had another set saved for a project. When John passed in 2013, Michael Petrov and I found two more sets. That makes four.
Of the two sets we found, I bought one and Michael bought the other. However when Michael passed a year later, I only found one of the two he owned.

I was told that the triggers John copied were from an actual Zischang Borchardt. He borrowed two original rifles (double-set triggers) to work from.

This is one of the original rifles John used to measure and make his double-set triggers.
... and this is a set of John's triggers.

Oh, my.Once again you make my day, sir! I'm in the midst of building a rifle on that DST Stevens action I got from you a year or so ago and now you come up with this!

If ever I find a Borchardt it will now be possible to build a proper tang and set triggers for it.Thanks so much for posting this....Christmas in July!

Joe,

Thanks for posting those magnificent pictures and
drawings.

I believe the dsts Rodney sells are very similar.  I made a set of Rodney's  Zischang dsts and then made another set using Richard Binger's ideas.  I modified the main spring to a coil spring which made a shorter trigger assembly and obviated the need to mill away the entire bottom tang.

I also really enjoyed looking at the time each step took.  Rodney's castings are a real time saver.

John

Great photos and read Joe! I was fortunate enough to to purchase a rifle and a few parts from Michael’s estate and also a couple molds from John Wills. The molds are perfect! I wish I had bought more stuff, I always need more stuff! We sometimes criticize the costs that a gunsmith may charge for custom work, but John’s shop notes illustrate the time involved. 96 hours for four sets of triggers equals 24 hours per set and at just $25 per hour, a set would have cost him $600 dollars! It’s definitely a labor of love, not profit! I would bet his engineering education and work was far more profitable, but many of us have benefited greatly from his labor of love for gunsmithing!

I was once told by a good friend, “quality work takes time”, and this confirms that thought!

I am working on a set of these for a Hauck. Rodney supplied the water cut triggers and trigger plate. They are quite wonderful, especially to me; I made my first set scratch. Mine will work well, but they will be very far from the exquisite artistry presented here. Thanks!
