Pine Squirrel Battlezone

After almost $300 damage to my tractor as pine squirrels had invaded my shed and yard, I declared war.

I have a Savage made Stevens 72 that I got when I was 8.  A year ago, I took off the stock (saving it aside if I ever want it back to original) and made a new stock of scrap cherry I had in the shed.  I added a cheap old x4 scope and turned it into a "Baby" Schuetzen.

I called this .22 out and into duty.  19 squirrels in 36 hours.  I have now lost official count but am near 30 squirrels and no longer seeing them.  Victory... and a lot of tails for the cats to play with and for tying flies.

Yes they are destructive pests. I recently rehomed 4 to the DNR property across the river. Last year I shot 15 & rehomed 5. They chewed under my porch into my basement. I'm NE Wisconsin. Welcome to the club! Jack

We have no outdoor cats nor want any (kill too many other good things such as songbirds).  Dogs have killed some in the past but are getting old.

Thanks.  I am not a great gunsmith or woodworker (I use the term Wood Butcher), but for my fun and interests, it works.

I like my songbirds to but my days are past where I can hear them. We keep a small pack of rat terriers around for pests since my abilities with a rifle are gone as well. Also tolerable wood on that rifle in the picture.

Unfortunately they don't appear to be the type to eat.
I have shot tree squirrels up here in the Sierra Nevada Mountains here in California and they are a real tasty treat to eat.

Nothing better than a fox or grey squirrel fried in an old well seasoned cast iron skillet.

Could you post a close-up of the carving under the cheekpiece?

This was some rough cut cherry from a friend's house.  I had to put two planks together to make this rather small butt stock.  I am a wood butcher at best and not a great woodworker, but it made for a fun little rifle that means a lot to me and has character.

Your carvings have the air of Folk Art. which essentially means work made by someone who is self-taught and whose execution, even if it comes across as "primitive", has a noticeable flair and rightness to it.  In short, I agree with oneatatime that they fit the rifle perfectly.
